buying bullets from the US

As I used to live right at the border I have done some extensive research on this. There is NOTHING in Canada Customs law that prevents you as a citizen from importing up to 1500 rounds of ammunition into Canada without a permit from DFAIT (Department of Foreign Affairs & International Trade).

The trouble starts & ends with the US laws. In order for you to posess ammunition or parts therof in the US you need an ATF Form 6NIA permit. That DOES NOT cover the export. For that you need to get a permit to export ammunition from the US Department of State. The trouble is, they won't issue them to anyone other than a licensed firearms business. Joe citizen can't get one- period.

If you get caught without the permits in the US you could be in big trouble. As for bringing it back to Canada yourself, I can't tell you to do it but if they don't check you at the border that is their fault isn't it? As for getting it through the mail, the US would have to check the mail going out of the country. Not too sure how often that happens. Canada Customs will let you import it. If you want more info, PM me & we can talk on the phone.

He was talking about bullets not ammunition.

Cyanide - I'm not set up to scan, will be away for a few days then I'll try to get you a copy. Meantime I'll try to type it out so you can understand it. (1) Safety cartridges - 5000 (2) Primers for safety cartridge cases - 5000 (3) Percussion caps - 5000 (4) Empty primed safety cartridge cases - 5000 (5) Gun powder (Black Powder) in canisters of 500 grams or less and smokeless powder in canisters of 4000 grams or less - 8 kg (6) Christmas crackers - 6 (7) Model rocket engines - 6 (8) Pyrotechnic distress signals and lifesaving devices - Any quanity necessary for the safe operation of the aircraft, vessel, train, or vehicle in which they are transported or for the safety of the occupants. NOTE: The above commitities must be imported for PRIVATE USE ONLY and not for sale with the exception of Christmas crackers which may be imported for either private use or sale. This was given to me by Canada Customs so don't scream at me, call Canada Customs.

Sure sounds like MEMORANDUM D19-13-2 of Canada Customs and Revenue Agency's IMPORTING AND EXPORTING FIREARMS, WEAPONS, AND DEVICES CUSTOMS TARIFF, CRIMINAL CODE, FIREARMS ACT, AND EXPORT AND IMPORT PERMITS ACT to me :)

As others have said, it is not Cdn law that is stopping you, but US law does.

I realize half the people on here can quote rules, regulations form numbers and so on but I would also think that a Canada Customs agent would not be buying stuff out of the States without having some idea what is legal or not.

Hell, I had to tell the last one about D-19 when she said I had "too much" powder (pre 911).

Most, esp. the young ones, do not know the laws they are there to enforce, plus I'm sure they (US Customs) know her and would look the other way, if they would even ask the "questions", you know, us vs them.

Well OK....how many Canadians are being detained for Life in US Prisons for bringing back hunting supplies, ammo,....

Does anyone know...or is all BS and Chest Pounding on CGN Again. Lets see the list of Prisoners and the Horror stories at Gitmo (if any exist!)...I haven't heard of any...Have You???

Yes there was one here in BC I belive. Maybe someone else can remember the details ...........

Lost vehicle etc ...... told, 'Don't come back......'

I appreciate all the replies and find that there is no real answer to the question. All I want to do is get 200-300 cast bullets for my 444 Marlin. My original thought was to order them from Beartooth Bullets who I dealt with a few years back, they will no longer ship to Canada. Montana bullets will still ship to Canada so I will deal with them ( in personal bulk ) as I suppose soon they will also soon not be able to ship here. I wonder what the laws will be when Hillary takes over?! Karl.

If you are going to be buying your bullets from a US business that is going to ignore US export law, and send them to you without the necessary permit, at least do them the courtesy of not naming them on an open intenet forum.

If it has nothing to do with exporting then why would Canada Customs have the form?

Those are limits for casual importation for personal consumption into Canada. This is nothing to do with United States' law controlling exports under ITAR.

Montana bullets advertises that they will ship to Canada on their website, so there is no real reason not to mention their name.

I can't believe this is so hard for some to understand.

It doesn't matter how many people get caught. It doesn't matter if anyone has gone to jail. IT IS AGAINST THE LAW TO EXPORT AMMUNITION COMPONENTS FROM THE US WITHOUT A PERMIT.

The rules of CGN prohibit discussing anything that violates Canadian or US law.

There are two possible reasons that a company would export controlled items without the necessary licence.
One is that they are knowingly violating the law, don't care if they get caught, and are prepared for the consequences if they are prosecuted.
The other is that they are unaware of the law. Taking advantage of a company's ignorance is one way of obtaining supplies, and, hey, if they get caught, they are the ones that will be in trouble.
It is entirely possible that their website is not monitored by law enforcement agencies.
This one is.

So..... I can't bring up that time I tore the tag off a mattress:confused:

Like Lenny Bruce said... or something to the effect...

I "said" it man... I didn't "do" it:D

If this is going to be the case then I'd suggest all the bull#### banter banter about CCW cease as it's currently illegal too... or so it would seem.
