Buying collectible ammo boxes... warning/rant

Unless its a rare calibre its not valuable.

A 50 year old 3030 shell isnt worth any more then a brand new one. Same goes for a 50 year old 12 gauge shell.

I would not be so certain of that. The most valuable 30WCF (30-30) box I have in my collection is a $300 box. And you cannot get much more common than 30-30. Some boxes are very scarce and desirable, regardless of the commanality of the caliber. And, with this hobby, conditon is very important.
A good reference guide for Winchester ammo boxes is “One Hundred Years of Winchester Cartridge Boxes 1856-1956” by Ray T Giles and Daniel Shuey. Know Ray personally, the most authoritative book out there on Winchester boxes. There is also a guide out there for Dominion / CIL ammo too I believe, though it may be for 22 caliber boxes, cannot recall.
To each their own, but I sometime think I enjoy my old ammo boxes just as much, if not more, than my old Winchesters.

I often wonder why people feel the need to slag other peoples' hobbies or interests. Ah, well, maybe that's their hobby - slagging others.

I noticed an older fellow working away in his garage across an alley from a restaurant one day. I wandered over and asked what he was doing. He told me he did small ornamental iron works and fixed metal chair frames. He took me in his house and showed me a really nice headframe he had made for his bed. You should have seen the look his wife and daughter gave me as I marched down the hallway behind him. :)
