Hey Im brand new to hand guns wondering if you guys could throw a couple good names around for me, so I have an idea, when I go to buy one. I need something tough. Smooth shooting nothin fancy but a gun that can work and still shoot when I need it. Obviously just going to use it at the range. Price is never much of an issue for me when it comes to quality you usually get what you pay for. I dont mind if the ammo is pricey cause honestly 22s are cheap but not very fun for me...:nest:

Springfeild Xd-m, love mine, Sig 226 or 229, Glock in your caiber of choice, or if money is no issue, Kimber!!

Oh, and I recommend 9mm, learn the skills with it as recoil is lighter then go bigger

This has been said a hundred times in these types of threads but you really have to go to a range and see what feels and shhot good for you. A few of my friends and myself included have bought our first handguns in the last few years and each of us ended up with something different. The suggestionn listed above are all great pistols but they may not be what YOU want/need, shooting them will immediately narrow it down to a couple of front runners. Then the decision is totally up to you.

Good luck ;)

You'll get a dozen different recommendations from a dozen different people. You need to go rent some pistols and try as many as possible in different cailbres.
9mm is a popular first choice, but so is 40S&W, .38/.357, and of course .45ACP.
Any of the big name brands are good, and I'll throw in CZ too. Getting very popular.

I think the S&W M&P range kit is a great starting point for a newbie - but only if you like the pistol. You might hate it, and love the Glock, Sig or CZ. Or you may be a wheelgunner.

You gotta go shoot LOTS before you decide.
