I had to make this anouncement somewhere where people would actually care haha!

This week I'm going out and buying my first rifle. My choice through some conversations and advice from collegues is going to be a: Steyr-Mannlicher Prohunter .30-06

I plan on hunting this fall for some big game as well as some smaller deer like creatures! And I've been told this is the "do it all" caliber. Is there anyone that can tell me a good type of cartrige to use for this type of game? I have a VX-III 4.5-14-40mm scope to mount with the rifle.

In case anyone is interested in buying a Steyr, you can find two left at www.MilArm.com in Edmonton. The only caliber they have left in stock is .270, one in stainless steel and the other in the prohunter matte finish.

Not to be a stick in the mud, but you sound like you're planning to just go out and blow away any "deer-like creature" that crosses your path. SHooting is a fun past time, and you'll love blowing holes in paper at 200yds with that beauty, but if you plan on hunting don't rush into it. Hunt to eat, dont just go out to kill.

Just my $.02

Don't get me wrong, that's just my enthusiasm speaking! I don't intend to go out and kill for the fun of it! I plan on going out with some very responsible hunters that I work with. And have been hunting for over 20 years. I'm hoping to get a deer or elk this fall. Maybe I'll get a shotgun between now and then, to see if I can get a wild turkey too. However most my time is going to be spent sending hot lead down a range for the most part and maybe giving trap a shot!

I'm guessing you're in Alberta if you're buying stuff from Milarm. If you wanna go for Turkey make sure to get in on the draw. I don't know when your name needs to be in, but I do know there aren't many turkey in these parts :(

Edit: Congrats on the rifle. I'm getting my first one soon too :D

Yup, I'm in Alberta. The turkey thing is an idea I got from a friend that said he actually ran into one out in the bush. I need to remember which friend that was! He said it was the size of small ostrich and quite ugly looking!

By the way the U.S is slapping an import ban on Steyr Rifles. I guess they sold a few HS50's to the Iranians for their border gaurd. Here's the link to the article I read.

Steyr

I know that www.ellwoodepps.com in Orillia Ont are dealers for gun you are looking for, good people to deal with and they take trades.
The 30.06 is a great cartridge I have 2 in my locker but I have kind of retired them as I found the wsm cartridge gives me more performance in many ways.
as getting older they are much lighter to carry, my new gun is almost 2lbs lighter than my 30.06s
good luck

Wholesale sports here is Saskatoon has a new prohunter in 30-06 with blued barrel for 1134.00 and a used stainless one in 300 win mag for 1024.00. I think those prices are accurate but if you need to barter they can help.

The prices at MilArm's website were wrong if they said $1275.00. Since then the price has dropped to $950.00 + GST for a sale they're having. So I picked it up last weekend while visiting Edmonton. I have to say that hammered barrle is quite nice to look at! As mentioned before they have/had two left in the .270, one stainless the other matte. Thanks for all your thoughts guys.

Try several different factory loads and see what the rifle likes best. May turn out to like Federal Premium 180 gr Partitions, or Remington's plain old core loct's. It's worth the trouble to try several brands of load and bullet makes out and see what it likes best.

And the nice thing is the 30-06 is very popular and usually pretty cheap. Look for sales at Walmart, Canbodian Tire and of course the gun shops and sporting goods stores. Congrads! Nice rifle. ;)

Oh man my shoulder is sore! Took her out for the first time and put about 30 rounds through it today. 20 of them myself, and I got it sighted. Everything worked great, though the howling wind was annoying! Can't wait to go out and do it again. I think i'll use the 42" plotter at work and make some nice target sheets.
