Buying my first Yugoslav M59/66 SKS! What should I look for and check??

Hey guys,

I am Buying an M59-66 SKS next week and will have a couple of guns to check out and potentially buy. What should I look for or be aware of, anything to avoid or make sure to inspect? Supposedly they are all unissued or as-issued and still in cosmoline. Thanks for the feedback I have experience with both Chinese and Russian SKS's, but this is my first time buying a Yugoslavian.

The grenade launcher site takes a good whack with the back of your hand to put it back down, that is normal. Hit it with the back of your hand evenly to avoid bending the sight. That was my only issue with the Yugo.

Any SKS should have the bore, bolt and gas pistol/tube/port inspected for corrosion. If you're not already comfortable with a basic field strip from your other SKS's, practice before you go in. If you want a numbers matching example, the Yugo rifles are numbered a bit different than Chinese or Soviet so keep an eye on that.

Yugo is unique in that it is designed to launch rifle grenades. Therefore, it has a gas setting near the front sight.

Inspect the Yugo as you would any sks(for rust, wear, crown, rifling, etc), but pay extra attention to the gas setting.
Can you freely actuate the gas setting lever? Is any part loose? Does it work on each setting?

Other things you might want to check: Does it have a grenade leaf sight? Does it have a night vision flip up for the rear and front sights? Does the bayonet attachment work?
Depending on the importer and the condition of the rifle, some features may not exist or work properly.

Hope this helps.

Thanks

Is the firing pin channel clear of cosmo? The firing pin is free floating, so if you can't wiggle it back and forth than it and if its stuck in a forward position it will slamfire.

Clean the inside of the bolt, Gilles (assuming you did not, if you did my apologies)

If you tip the bolt up and down you should hear the free floating firing pin going "click click click" as it hits the front and back end of the bolt. If it is jammed with gunk and unable to move freely back and forth, you get the slam fires and "go fast" mode lol

Make sure you strip and inspect the gas system and look for rust inside the gas tube and on the gas piston. Would also recommend stripping the bolt by knocking out the firing pin retaining pin and inspect firing pin for signs of corrosion

reclean your rifle I had this issue as well. More cosmoline came out of someplace and required removal. The bolt and pin were 100% clear after the first cleaning. Guessing the heat of firing emits residue cosmoline. Clean and remove this residue and you will see the slamfire issue resolved.

try blasting out the bolt with break rotor cleaner . do this outside . or some form of major degreaser .

The ones sold at Tradeex a couple years back were mainly old brand new stuff, they are very good ones to buy. I have cleaned one and shot 200 rounds. I was breaking in this 59-66. JP.

Yep, had one like that, the firing pin had a burr on it it, 2 minutes with some emery and problem solved.

Real good way to melt cosmo out of that bolt, take a boiling kettle and hold the bolt with a big pair of pliers, pour away. Then use some brake clean after. Voila.
