Buying new Savage 93 .22 WMR, should I worry?

Hey all,

First off I'll say that I do not like buying brand new firearms. The quality in firearms built today by certain manufacturers has all but totally dropped to nothing. Weather it be poor fit and finish, perfuse mechanical failure or non supporting customer service, firearms and they're companies ain't like they used to be. It's a fact, not an opinion.

I am, however, I'm in the market right now for a bolt action .22 WMR and the Savage model 93FV seems to fit the bill. I'm mainly into the purchase for the round it's self and less for the firearm. But the question I have here is: Are there any ongoing, widespread problems with the model 93 as of late? I've had my fair share of "fix-me uppers" in my shooting career and am getting tired of having to get a recently bought arm to work proper before doing any "paper work".;)

Any-who, hope to get some feed back on this.

Thanks.

Ti

Hey Ti~the only .22WMR I've ever owned IS a 93FV (a few years old now) and it's been a solid performer. In the time I've had it, 2 HMRs have come and gone and the Savage 93FV remains. As accurate as any .22WMR I've ever used, decent value, and of course...what's not to love about the down-range wallop of the round itself. Mine shoots 30gr. V-Max best. Mine started as a plastic-stocked model with a used $50 Chinese scope (shot it all the time) then I got it all fancied-up with a Boyd's stock, EGW rail, TR bolt know and better scope...and I never use it now! Anyhow...mine has been 100% reliable, and chugs away with no issues.

I have one in 17 HMR. I came very close to selling, even listed it on the EE, but when there was interest I realized I wanted to keep it. I was going to sell it to fun another gun, then thought about it, and I would have rebought it later, so decided not to sell.

The only problem is the cheapo plastic stocks. Just grab a boyds for it, I still have to do the same. Some come with better stocks, but I wanted the heavy barrelled stainless steel model, as far as I know that's a synthetic stock only model.

My wife shot some 1/2" groups with our stainless HB model on 22mag yesterday at 50m. Can't complain about that... except I couldn't quite do that good..... damn....... quiet drive back from the range.

Love my 93. No issues with it and it shoots fantastic with 40 gr CCI. My 93R17 is a fantastic shooter as well. Stainless is available in laminate stocks as well.

I sold my 93 to a buddy who dropped it into a boyd stock for 100 bucks. Now I'm jealous and want it back! Shot great and never any problems.

Well, I picked one up last night. Just a plain Jain iron sight model with a plastic stock..........yuck! But I'm in it for the round, not the gun so I guess I did OK. $219 was what Wholesale was asking, not bad. Now just go to get out to the farm and make some gongs chime.

Thanks everyone for the input. Really do appreciate it.

Ti

EDIT: 22LRGUY - Is the bolt handle a screw on sort of deal? Just wondering how you got that swapped out for the "tacticool" bolt on there?

It's a savage! What's to worry about?
I think savage makes great rifles!

I've had half a dozen or so and not been dissappointed yet...

I would spend the extra on a laminate stocked model if i was you.

That crappy plastic is very flimsy, and the dropped comb is setup for iron sights, not a scope, despite the fact the gun comes with no sights. I hated that stock on my Savage MKIIbv, and it is the reason I ended up selling the gun. By the time I replaced the stock I was close enough to the price of a better gun to say F - it.

Hell if you ask me, pony up the coin and buy a CZ American, or Varmint. The Savage doesn't even compare IMHO.

Like you say, the quality feel of a gun manufactured today is hard to find, and that Savage feels like a toy in comparison to the CZ.

x2. THat is why I sold all my savages. No comparison at all.

Whats that worth?

In a different thread 22lrguy said he paid $60 or $80 for it. Was one of those two numbers lol. Contact the warranty depo in quebec and see what they want for one.

"Like you say, the quality feel of a gun manufactured today is hard to find, and that Savage feels like a toy in comparison to the CZ"

Thing is my Savage consistently outshoots my friends CZ (admittedly by a very small margin).
I buy a gun for accuracy...not how purty it is.

I still have a Savage 93 22WMR, and as soon as I pick up anything else in 22WMR, it's gettin the boot. I just haven't prioritized the 22WMR yet, but most likely will get a CZ.

I've never had a CZ, but I really like the savage, it shoots great, it just needs a new stock. I'm ok with that as I get to pick the stock I like from boyds.

It's not just the stock.

The Savage looks and feels like a cheap toy.

The CZ looks and feels like a real gun.

There is quite a difference in this regard, but for the money the Savage is a bargain.

I don't know about you but I am sick of bargain guns, and am gonna start focusing on guns that will last a lifetime. The market is flooded with "bargain guns" these days. LOL
