I was visiting the border town in Lynden Washington USA. I was very suprised about the cost of new out of the box pistols. We saw a Glock 17 for $550 USD (that works out to be $654 in "Queen-Backs"). Compared to the best in-shop Canadian price that I have seen that seemed to be at least $200 difference ..or greater! I spoke with a Canadian Customs agent that moaned when I mentioned that I wanted to buy a hand gun in the USA and bring it into the "The Great White North". He did everything possible to discourage me ie implying that is was a very difficult process and expensive. When I asked for specific details, I was suprised how easy it sounded. One would have to registar the gun with NB, then simply take it home if you had an ATT. If the gun was made in the USA, NO DUTY would be charged on the gun. If the gun was made outside of the USA then duty would be charged (20%). Good case to look for a nice S&W, COLT, Ruger,or other Yanky Bangers. I spoke to an American Customer Agent and he spoke with a supervisor. He did not seem very knowledgeable. I ended up speaking to the vender in Lynden and he was quite knowledgeable. There was paper work that he would fill out, a $25 USD charge for him to drive to the border and drop off the pistol. I would then inform the US border that this pistol is in process of transfering to Canada. It sounds like I would collect my paper work, pay any duty and take it home. It likely would make sense to pre-purchase the gun, hold it at the US shop so that you could get all the Canadian paper work ironed out 1st (that can take 2weeks!!) for restricted guns sometimes. When I investigated it, didn't sound that tough really. For Canadians that live close to the border, like Vancouver, it might make dollars and sense to look into this especially when the "Queen-Back" is strong. Any experiences of purchasing hand guns in the US??

let me know

Just a note as to prices here in Canada.
Most dealers up here are paying damn near US retail on guns they purchase out of the USA. Canada's buying power doesn't even equal California for volume and dealers do not get the same breaks as US ones do. Add into that silly shipping fees to transport stuff across the border and fees for the paperwork, duties and tariffs where applicable, and it's amazing that sometimes our prices are still close to the US ones.
