Buying Used Guns?

Hi All

I really thought I saw a post about this before, but can't find it now, so as always apologies if I'm asking something already covered..

This might be an odd question, but -generally speaking- is it safe to buy used guns? I finally received my RPAL last week, and started looking at some different firearms.

I did notice that many (such as the GSG 16) seemed to be out of stock in most places , for obvious reasons.

I did see a number of them for sale on a "used gun" website (don't recall the name atm) that (for teh GSG 16) basically had the Gun, 4 or 5 magazines, and the drum for $600 ish .
Not a huge savings (although I have no idea how much the mags cost, haven't looked yet) but seemed a decent price.
A couple other guns that I was interested in also were available with a few extras.

Multiple listings also said things like "low /non usage" etc, but..

Honestly I don't mind buying used cars, but those are something I can look at before I buy, I have no idea what to look for in a used firearm or if it's something best left until I have a lot more experience.

I figured it might be nice to pick up a gun that's already past the "break in" period I've read about, but again not really sure that's a big deal.

Thanks as always for any suggestions/direction or input!

Usually safe to buy used guns many sellers either post or provide pictures of barrels, bolts stocks etc to give an idea of condition. Some firearms can only be bought used like the SKS. With that said I research what I am buying, I buy for the long term and where possible I try buy new for warranty etc. If you do have to break in something new you will know exactly what you did with it from day one.You can pick up deals and you can also pick up other peoples problems so check reviews for the firearm in question as well as seller posts and reviews. Good luck!

The EE here offers a layer of protection with trader ratings and feedback. Some buy and sell websites are often used for scams, but there are some good finds to be had. Generally speaking a well cared for firearm will outlast most of us. Good luck and remember buy the safe for the guns you wish to own, not the guns you own right now.

Do you go to the sellers house? Or meet in a public location? I've seen people suggest to do the trade at a local gun store, or even a police station.

Most of the guns I've bought through dealers, auctions or private have been used. Online dealers used / surplus have usually been well described and photo'd but I've found most dealers are reasonable in responding to a reasonable level of questions / support to make the deal. Online auctions .. sometimes a crap shoot - are sold as is, where is and that attracts potential issues. Live auctions work well for me where I can go and look at the item, handle it (gun shows as well). Private deals are usually through various contact networks and again I can see the item. So as you say, its like a used car .. would you buy it online without a test drive ..

Lastly, any used firearm (even Grandpa's bequest to you) should be treated with care until one is sure of its condition. Safest fall back is a gunsmith if you are unsure.

If I were doing face to face I would prefer to do it at a range, but the best deal I ever scored was FTf at his house. Do whatever is comfortable for you. Parking lots of sporting goods stores work well.
