Can anyone here tell me about C-300 powder? A chap gave me a jug of it and it is probably CIL powder. It still smells sweet to me and, despite shelf time, is probably still useful. It isn't in any manuals I've got and I'd like to shoot it off for practice in trap or skeet. Does anyone know if there are loads available for it? Thank you. Fred

I asked the same question a month or so ago. Same scenario- a friend gave me 4 lbs of the stuff. Got a little feedback but not much solid data.( use the search feature in the reload forum) I do have an old bag of CIL C112 wads with some data. Load data is for CIL hulls (whatever they were at that time) 11/8oz shot- 2 3/4 dram equiv. 17.5 grs. --3 dram equiv 18.5 grs. I used this powder years ago and if I remember correctly it was treated as the equivalent of 700X. I also would like some solid data with modern components- a 1 oz load in AA or Gold Medal hulls with available wads.
"The second addition Lyman book lists a C.I.L.Canuck plastic case ,18.5 grains of C-300 with a C209 primer and a C.I.L. C-112 wad ( they look just like a white Hodgdon Arro-wad that can be used with AA hulls) for 1145FPS and 7,740LUP.
20 grains with everything else the same gives you 1190FPS and 9.070 lup

Thank you very much for the replies. I really appreciate it. Guess I'll have to put on my thinking cap a bit and wait for a day when I'm feeling adventurous. So far I'm thinking that if the powder is like 700X, then it should be safe enough duplicating a 700X load with modern components, particularly one that results in fairly low pressures. I'm just wondering if it is worth the risk? Boy I sure hate to throw stuff out

That's very close to the 700X load for that wad.
I'll check the manual when I get home and check the 700X data against what I listed for C-300

When I first got into reloading 12 guage, about35 years ago, I bought out a fellows entire reloading setup, including a 12 pound keg of c300. I was told at that time that C300 was a surplus powder out of some form of artillery, and was the CIL version of 700X. I used 700X data for all the years I loaded that powder, with no problem.
I finally decided to try some 1 oz loads with the C300 I wrote about following the idea of using 700X data. I copied a load that came with some Claybuster 4100-12-B White Lightning wads that I bought. Primers used are Cheddite 209. The load is 17.5 to 17.7 g C300. I used AAHS hulls and Remington hulls with the Claybuster wads and I loaded and tested a box of AA (old) hulls using XL-1 wads. (I don't use the XL-1 wads with polyformed hulls. Too much chance of catching the lip of the wad base. Since the XL-1 wad works I would be willing to use the WAA12SL wad too...my opinion, not a recommendation.). I've shot at least a box of shells using each load. The powder leaves a fair amount of residue (700-x does in my guns too) and I even found a flake of unburnt powder in the chamber on a couple of occasions. There are fairly wicked by-products in the smoke coming out of the chamber afterwards too. If I had a lot of the powder I might increase the load to see if things change, but I probably won't do that with the amount I have left. I haven't chronographed the load yet, but I am getting reasonable hits with it from the 16 yard line and in skeet. The report sounds right and I haven't heard a blooper yet, after a 100 or so shells. A blast from the past I guess...
