When going through the collection today doing the standard inspection, cleaning, stock BLO-ing and such I came across the following problem...

My No1 has an (I believe) arsenal repair that appears to have been done in 2 sections:

Checking to make sure it was still secure, and wasn't going to fall off on its own (or at the range!) the following surprise happened:

I am seeking your advice and assistance on the best way to fix this...
Thanks in advance

Glue the part back, and to add more strentgh, you can drill a small hole and use 1 or 2 littles wood screw made of brass. Once the screw are in far enough to secure the part, cut the heads off and carefully file the screw flush to wood. Will look like the reinforcing screw found on the handguards of typical no1.

First of all, get out the furniture stripper and LIBERALLY goop gell on the residual glue. Tape off the nice parts of the stock as it WILL take off the finish. Use an old toothbrush once the glue is mushy to get rid of it all.

What has happened here is the old repair held, but the gun was dropped on the buttplate at some point and the whole heel sheared off, including the repair. Likely the wedge under the repair is also faultily held on.

Remove the buttplate and see if you can pry off the back half of the split. Now is the time to properly clean up BOTH parts of that split. Also clean the glue off as per above.

IF you can get it clean enough, the parts should mate precisely - more so than now. IF they do, use cyano-acrylate (certain types of crazy glue have this in them - read the label) and glue and clamp the stock.

If you can't get them to mate closely, get a good 2-part epoxy that has "wood" in the list of bondables. Get a scrap piece of walnut and sand off some fine sanding dust to mix with your epoxy. Then epoxy the parts back on. Once it cures, it will NEVER come off.

IMHO get another buttstock and colour (cnd spelling :D) it to match the rest of your rifle. This type of break will forever be your bane. An arsenal repair does not look like this friend. Its fubar'ed i do believe. They (No1Mk3 buttstocks) are out there, its the rest of the wood that's hard to find. WTB on EE will get results.

IF YOUR GOING TO CHANGE THE BUTT, CAREFULLY REMOVE THE FORE WOOD BEFORE REMOVING THE KINGSCREW! DO THIS NOT AND YOU WILL CRACK THE FORESTOCK.

Thanks for the advice. Is the consensus that the additional damage was done after the main arsenal repair?

The rifle itself is quite the specimen. BSA 1916, refurbed once and re barrelled in.. 1923 if I remember properly (been a while since that hand guard came off), FTR'd in 1953, and C broad arrow stamped at some point along the way..

Admittedly this is the full extent of my "by the markings" knowledge of this rifle. If anyone else has any input, I'd be glad to hear it!
