Late to the game, building a C7A1 or C7CT clone (now in the US so both easier and harder) - undecided which.

Wondering what the id/od/thickness is of the washer used in the gen 2 bases between the optic and base.

Also the differences between gen 3 and gen 4. As I understand it both have the 'zero hold" spring.

Last question, what is the advantage of "open gate" elevation adjustment and how is it done.

Open gate shooting gives you a more accurate ability to adjust for different distances. The C79 has a quick range adjustment wheel "200/300/400..." Which is great but if you're at 250 there's no in-between from 200 to 300 that you can use. Shooting minute of man that's not a big deal but if you want to be as accurate as possible that's less than ideal. If you shoot open gate and you know how many clicks you adjust for shooting at 200 meters and how many clicks you adjust for 300 meters you can split the difference. Lots of people who shoot open gate (always seen it on our CAFSAC team guys) mark their ranges with little dashes of nail polish on the adjustment wheel so they can quickly index between their ranges. It's called "open gate" because to go between the quick range adjustment wheel and manual adjustments, regularly for zeroing, there's a little silver "gate" over the wheel that you click open that lets you adjust elevation and then would close once you're zeroed. Open gate shooters just leave it open. Not optimal for carrying around on patrol and whatnot but an excellent tool to be able to utilize on the fly for more accurate engagements at distances not ending with "00".

I have no idea what the answers to your other questions are, sorry. I was a stores man for a little while and asked around about the Gen differences because they were counted differently on our accountability sheets and only ever got shoulder shrugs so my professional opinion is 🤷‍♂️.

For what it's worth if you didn't know the C7CT never really made it to actual use. It was more of a trial program that unfortunately never really took off. They trialled integrating sharpshooters into rifle sections several times and it just didn't fit with doctrine enough to be adopted. You would have a very very very hard time finding parts, as far as I know they were never put into full production outside of the trial. Could be wrong, just what I seen at the time.

If you wanted to larp as a patrolman of the era the C7A1 would be the much more accurate adaptation.

Thanks for the replies. I believe KevinB had s C7CT in Afghanistan but might have not been CF at the time which would make doctrine somewhat less relevant. But yes, pretty much a unicorn.
