C79 Elcan Tritium

So I got a transparent lab quality pressure vessel and a bunch of lint free desiccant packs. I also got a account with praxair so I can get dry nitrogen for purging. I found where to get the 1.5mm x 6mm green flat tube tritium vials. I’m thinking on doing a similar purge process to Burris in which I open up the Elcan in this pressure vessel with desiccant and replace the tritium vial then purge it 20 times with dry nitrogen and check it for leaks submerged in hot water. I’m currently waiting on my CNSC licence for importing the tritium phosphorus lamps then I’m off to the races. Anyone interested in having their tritium replaced?

Hey there, Just wondering if you could give me a heads up on how much lamps would be? And if possible when you are planning on doing this? I was thinking about grabbing a friends c79 but his tritium is long dead. I appreciate it.

Ok, I’ll post on here when I know the unit cost for the tritium phosphorus lamps. I know the dry nitrogen will cost me about $90 for a tank and I’m not sure how much I’ll use up purging but once I get some more info I’ll update it. I machined a tool for the plug and disassembled mine in the vessel to see what I’d be up against with the removal. I pulled the tritium module by releasing the spring clip and pulled it out with no problem. I sealed my Elcan back up for now (no issues). I then dug at the tritium lamp to try and free it from the mounting module (holder). The rectangular flat tube H3 1.5mm x 6mm vial compared to a 1mm x 6mm cylinder tritium vial.

As you can see the old rectangle phosphorus lamp is almost dead compared to the year and a half old cylinder lamp

It was held in by a dab of optic adhesive and I had no issues removing the old lamp without breaking it. It’s a pretty easy job so far. I got a few round tritium vials from other projects kicking around to compare. The old vial is so much dimmer than a new one! It makes me giddy thinking of how the new ones will be! Especially because they are flat and have more surface area than the round cylinder lamps therefore providing more light.

I figure I’ll order a dozen vials to get set up and I can do them no prob. I’ll get a idea when I receive the vials and seat one in my module and try purging of how much nitrogen I will use when I do it. Stay tuned if your interested and I’ll post results. I’m not in it to make a pile of money, I just think my C79 would be way cooler with a new tritium light source!

That would be very good of you!!! I would be very interested in getting this done. Perhaps I will purchase that optic then. Thanks Repper!!

Hey again, I just thought I would let the thread know that I found a guy on ebay here in Canada who has 10+ replacement cells for the c79. They are not cheap (180 shipped) but they have the housing that holds the tritium made as well. I dont think its kosher for me to post a link in here so if you search "Elcan c79" or "c79 tritium" it pops up. All one would need is the Nitrogen for purging.

Ok CGN,

I’m finally set up to import some tritium! What a PITA that was. It’s looking like the tritium lamps will be 12-15$ each. My minimum order is for 100 lamps. I’m already set up for dry nitrogen purging. Do we have the interest here to do a full 100 C79 replacements?

These are Trigalight brand tritium vials so they are high end with 12-15 year life. I can sell just the lamp, I will be able to install the lamps and nitrogen purge C79’s. It’s pretty much what ever you guys want. After I’m done mine I can also lend out the tool for the Elcan plug if you guys want to DIY.

I will have to track one down then. The only thing holding me back from buying one in the past was being unable to change tritium.

Armament Technology replaced mine. (902)454-6384 ext 221 is Ted talk to him.
When did you have that done? I contacted them (around November 2017) and they replied to me they no longer do that service. Crystal was the person I talked to. Would be nice if they did still do it.

I guess it's who you know... It was last year.
