C96 Mauser Broomhandle 9mm export

As long as the 9x19 upper assembly mates to the antique 7.63 frame it should be fine; Proteus Armaments has a video on YouTube about a rebarreled (shot out) Chinese model C96 going from 7.63 to 9x19 and it functions fine for the most part. Do it yourself at your own risk

I wish I could piece together an antique C96 from a frame but alas that would be annoying and likely still expensive

This question keeps getting asked over the years. I first started hearing them 60 years ago.

The 7.62 Mauser cartridge and the 7.62x23 are identical dimensionally, but their load pressures differ enough to cause damage to C96 variants.

Lever Arms brought a crate of C96 pistols into the warehouse, which had been ridden hard a put away wet.

Most of them had bulged barrels or broken parts, ranging from broken take down levers, to broken recoil springs and grips.

The other parts on the pistols were usually in good condition.

All of the pistols came out of Czechoslovakia, along with another crate of P08s, which ended up going to Robinson Arms in Victoria.

The P08s hadn't even been taken out of their holsters, before they were stacked neatly in the crates (well over 300 pistols) then had hot, melted cosmoline poured over it all an the lid sealed with heavy wax paper and screwed on.

The broomhandles were packed similarly, but in wood stock holsters, without the harnesses.

We had to approach a local contractor in Vancouver to make up a bunch of springs for replacement. The contractor knew what we were doing, as he had been in the shop and expressed interest in purchasing/trading for a few of the pistols, but he wanted to select them of course.

He was quite eager to make up the springs but he also advised Mr Lever to use wire of larger diameter, so the springs would handle the pressures created by the 7.62x23 ammunition, which was starting to become available at the time. Other than that, CIL/Dominion, Kynoch and Rottweil were about the only options for ammo, and they were loaded to 7.63 Mauser specs, but depending on the lot, sometimes wouldn't cycle the actions.

Mr Lever thought the advice was sound and we bought several hundred of the "enhanced" springs from the contractor.

Out of just over 200 pistols in that crate, we managed to salvage about half of them. The parts from the rest, except for the wooden holsters, were sent to Numrich in the US, they didn't want the holsters, due to the new laws in 1968.

I looked at every pistol in that crate, hoping to find one with "RED 9" grips, no such luck.

During WWII, the Germans told the people who had been issued the C96 pistols that Soviet 7.62x53 ammunition could be used under emergency conditions. I guess when it gets down to that, any port in a storm. Just like 9mm being OK for use in emergency conditions in Webly pistols.

OP, IF, you get new springs, intended to handle the recoil generated by the brand of 9x19 ammunition you choose to shoot, IMHO you won't damage your pistol.

Do your own due diligence of course, beforehand.
