Hey all, so i recently had the fortune of coming across a mauser c96 chambered in 7.63x25 at my local gun shop. It is a mismatch of serial numbers but I didnt mind because then I get to shoot it without feeling guilty (and also the price was reasonable). So when all the paperwork went through and I got to take it home I took it apart to see if anything was wrong with it as the shop said they didnt know if it was in firing condition. After a while I discovered the firing pin was cracked in half and the spring surrounding it was slightly bent. I was not too disapointed as I knew these parts were available at multiple stores in the US. So I ordered the parts along with a few stripper clips for it and had it expensively shipped to Canada as they wouldnt let me buy it with a Canadian card and ship it to some family just across the border. When the parts came I went about the business of installing them but soon realized that the firing pin wasnt quite the same as the one that was in there. Afterwards I researched around online to see if maybe there were two different types of firing pins but after much searching I couldnt even find a photo of my old firing pin. Ive included a photo of the two firing pins beside each other, the black one is the one I ordered in. Im hoping someone who has a bit more experience with older firearms can hopefully help me out here. Thanks!

I cant really comment on the firing pin, and apoligize to thread jack. But what is a good rate for a c96? Specifically a Red 9 with a buttstock?

That's a nice broom handle, will be awesome when you get it running!

The only c96 ive seen for sale besides this one was one chambered in 7.63x25 with matching parts but no butt stock and the guy was trying to get around $3200 for it.

A quick fix would be to get someone to copy old one. 96s are all hand fitted, so they need tlc to make them
shoot. New one may hand fit into place. Find someone who knows these guns.

Is it 7.63x25mm, or is it .30 Mauser?

Note, there are threads here (and elsewhere) discussing the dangers of using 7.62x25mm Tokarev ammo in a .30 Mauser pistol. They are similar, but the Tok ammo is usually loaded HOT, and the recoil ends up getting absorbed by the locking piece that the firing pin passes through. If it shatters....the bolt flies straight back...towards faces. Which is bad from what I hear.

There was a company in the UK that had BHM parts. I ordered a new safety from them (I think there were 3 types of safety)

I'll see if I can dig up the website.

Do not shoot Tokarev ammo in it or you will wreck the pistol or yourself. It shoots a weaker .30 mauser...........Harold

I have two C96's,one a regular one like yours and one a Bolo, both firing pins are the same, but you have to realize that the locking lugs are not identical, one is squared off and the other one is rounded of,so the pins only go in one way.
Once you insert them you have to push fairly hard with a screw driver in the slot since the firing spring tends to hang up a bit on the recoil spring, then you have to line up the lugs with their respected slots, the square one is on the top.
Push the firing pin in as far as it will go against the spring pressure and turn it a quarter turn to the left and release,it should lock right in.
I tried mine this morning and I can exchange them between both guns with no problem.
I would like to include a picture but being an "Old fart " and not all that computer literate I could not get it done.
Good luck,
Herman

Use to own one of these in 7.63 Mauser, made in early 1914, shot beautifully too. I can say taking it apart and reassembling was interesting with all the small parts that work in conjunction with one another. I remember there being a U.K. provider of parts for these and he has a website online that supports the Luger and C96. I can't remember what it is called but I got a few parts, including the stripper clips, from him.

The broken firing pin looks like the one lug or second pattern introduced at about serial # 20000, the other is the later two lug made from c #35000.

Thanks for all the responses, and to the few people that advised I not shoot tokarev ammo through this that is correct but just so you know 7.63x25 & .30 mauser are the same cartridge. 7.62x25 is the tokarev ammo, the numbers look similar but are different. I will probably do a little more searching to see if i can find the "one lug or second pattern" firing pin that green was talking about.

Yes,i did not look close enough to notice that yours only has one lug,I wonder if the replacement would work by grinding one of the lugs off?

The firing pin you got is the right one. The broken one was someones homemade hack job. do not grinding the second lug off the factory firing pin you bought. Just read up and learn how to install it (align in properly, push and rotate a half turn).

C96 Canada sells C96 Mauser "broomhandle" parts

I have this Broomhandle now and was not able to install the firing pin after some trying. I suppose when i get home tonight i'll try again but it legitimately seems to not fit.

Got it, the spring on the end of the firing pin wasn't all the way on and it was jamming things up. Tightened it up and voila!
