I just picked this up at auction and am very happy with the pistol, it does look alot like it was released from service in a Commonwealth country though. Serial number dates it at 1910.

Any opinions or information would be appreciated.

Hi Calgary. That is definately the sold out of service mark. Lovely that it is on a C96 Mauser. The C96 Mauser was a favourite among some officers in British and Canadian service. They supplied their own equipments for the most part and if they bought a pistol that was non-conforming to British service pattern then that was fine with the officer corps. An officer was allowed a personal weapon. This C96 was
probably commercially acquired and brought into WW1 era service. If the officer gets KIA or wounded then the pistol would remain Brit property and not a War Trophy. Not a Canadian item as there is no C encircling the sale mark. Interesting that the C96 was a preferred item
in the Boer War and WW1 which is telling about opinions of other pistols available at the time. JOHN

It looks like its freshly stamped over the chamber. Ines look too sharp and shiny
It took dozens of photos with different lighting to get a pic that accentuated the stamps. The overal patina looks consistent to me. Also while I believe the marks could mean something else I am not sure why a forger would not just put a broad arrow somewhere, why sold out of service?

Churchill and Sam Steele used them while on service
