Hi all... somehow I seemed to have amassed a collection of firearms without a .22 and I need to rectify this.

I also appreciate the need to support my local gun shop, and I do drop enough money there so I don't feel bad for looking at Cabela's while they have a bit of a sale.

So, right now they have Savage 64 FXP with a 4x32mm scope for $169.99 and the Marlin 795 for $199.99. Free shipping (father's day promotion, code FATHER).

I like the Savage has a scope... one less thing to buy. BUT the Marlin 795 has a large capacity aftermarket magazine available.

End use us plinking with friends and friendly competition... in a few years, my kids can use it as their first rifle.

Opinions?

I'd go with the marlin. Any marlin I've ever had with the microgroove rifling has been extremely accurate (all 3 would shoot moa groups). Chances are you'd end up wanting to replace the scope on the savage package pretty quickly anyway.

I have and like both. Both prices are not bad.

I would avoid package deals on common guns that include a scope. The scope is likely to be crap. The rings may be crap or just above crap grade.

I think the whole large magazine thing is overrated. I would not let the lack of large magazines deter me from a rifle that I handled and that I thought felt good.

If you can, go handle both rifles and pick the one that speaks to you.

All that said, you could not go wrong with an old Savage 6 or Stevens 87. Fifteen rounds in the tube and $120 or less in most places.

Thanks for the feedback. The 795 isn't a great discount and I see that's the normal price at a number of places so I'll be in no great hurry.

I was wondering this as well. I like my marlin bolt but want some semi fun that isn't my SKS and wont break the bank buying ammo and the rifle.
