Want a new hunting knife, anyone had any experience with the cabela's/buck vanguard knife? http://www.cabelas.ca/product/850/cabelas-alaskan-guide-series-vanguard-knife

I started with and used for decades the standard buck 110 folding hunter. Nice knife but wanted something a little different blade shape. Tried bucks traditional hunting knife but found it just a little too big and unwieldy for me. Next came across I think it's an, "elk point" knife at napa. Cheap, really comfortable to use and loved the blade shape for skinning/gutting/boning, but it simply doesn't hold an edge worth a crap.

Which brings me to the vanguard. Figure if it's a buck it'll hold an edge and the shape looks like what I'm looking for. Thoughts? Other suggestions? Thanks for your reply.

Can't go wrong with a buck IMO. The vanguard is a solid blade shape and last year when I was looking for a knife I almost got it... then this caught my eye.

I snagged the puma not really knowing what the quality would be like but I was not disappointed. Blade holds an edge for eons, and overall the craftsmanship is high quality.

Just my $0.02

I have nothing but praise for my BRKT Fox River. I tried my damndest to cut through the sternum on a cow elk this year while waiting for a saw but couldn't get through. I was putting all my strength into it and sawing up and down a bit but it wouldn't spilt. After field dressing the cow and trying to get through the sternum it was still literally shaving sharp. The A2 steel in that knife is tough as nails.

Having said that, the blade you linked to has S30V steel. As long as it has a halfway decent heat treat it should be MUCH better than the average knife. The S30V gives up a bit to its replacement S35VN but they are both better than any 440 steel.

I have the Vanguard with the rubber handle as well and I love it. One of my favorite hunting knives. You always get a great grip on it and when your up to the elbows inside a deer I don't worry about losing control of it. It holds an edge fairly good and sharpens nicely. For the money you can't go wrong with the Vanguard.

I have the rubber-handled Vanguard as well, and I like it. My favourite all-around hunter is the Cold Steel Master Hunter (the non-gut-hook one). I have a couple, on in stainless and one in CarbonV. They're both around 20 years old and are still my most-used knives.
