So I want to buy my wife an SKS but want a decent one, does anyone have feedback on what they have seen at Cabela's? While $199 is a good price these days, should I pay more to get a non-refurb or 'select grade'? I think I've read enough to pick a decent one from the rack if I have the option to, but would like to get some CGN style feedback first. Thanks and Happy New Year!

IMHO, if you plan on shooting it a lot, get a refurb at the best price you can get. Non-Refurb select grade rifles are 'generally' bought and kept as collectables though I am sure there will be a comment on that shortly!;)

If you're after a shooter, then get the cheapest one you can. If it's something you want to hold on to for a decade or more as a wall hanger, spend the extra $60-80 for an unissued non-refurb.

Thanks guys. It wouldn't be a wall hanger, definitely a shooter for the range or to take camping. It would probably be a long time ownership sort of thing, she's not as fickle as me so as long as it was dead reliable and reasonably accurate (SKS accuracy) then she would be happy with it.

If you get a "super-grade" and it is only $20 or $30 more, what you should (or could) be getting, is blued metal instead of BBQ paint
and good lacquer without lots of ### happening on the stock. The run of the store re-furbs will shoot just as good but your wife
will appreciate the niceness of a better appearance. The real "un-issued", "un-refurbed" stuff can be great and only costs $60-$80
more but are more work to locate and verify.

SKS's are starting to scrape the bottom of the barrel for quality. Today's "supergrade" would have been last years "meh".

The designation from the Cabela's supergrade is black bayonet, and matching numbered. They were still refurbed, and no guarantee of bluing being original and not "BBQ" painted. Although, they seem to have a higher percentage than the "regular" grade of being blued or more-of the original bluing.

So I went to Cabela's and they just sold their last one, no more in until after the sale ends. Marstar has some select unrefurbished in stock for $249 so I might buy one from them.

I was just on 'The Gun Dealer' website (out east). They are still advertising SKS's there at decent prices.

They're all refurbs, despite what Cabela's claims. Refurbs aren't always stamped as such or all beaten up. Many still have matching numbers too.

I picked one at Wholesale sports last year and though a refurb, it was all matching...absent a forcematch this is likely as good as it gets though in fairness I haven't checked them out at either store recently.

I bought my first SKS at Wholesale. And it was a beauty. Non refurb all matching. Just as nice as the ones I got from Wiemajack later on.
I guess those days are long gone, but it was great while it lasted.

A) check your local canadian tire. They sometimes have half decent ones at half decent prices

B) if you get them from Marstar, stock up on ammo. Buy a couple cases. Even if you rarely shoot it, the stuff has been around for 20+ years, so it can sit in your basement for another 20+ lol.

Hi. I bought one this fall and then a second laminate from Cabelas on black Friday. The ones I got were worth it in my opinion. They are Tula refurbs with newly issued laminated stocks (no ###X) and stamped with the matching serials. The magazine is the only unmatched serial and yes they are BBQ painted but look sharp. Not sure if their current stock is the same. The internals look great, don't think they were fired much if at all.
