Man, I was looking at the PAL/RPAL wait times thread this morning and it kind of got me bummed. I mailed my apps on October 18th with the assumption that everything would be wrapped up by Christmas - now I'm really starting to question that...

Anyway - I'm starting to think about joining a range and I'd like some input from some of my fellow Calgarians and folks in the surrounding areas. Things (in no particular order) that have been on my mind that will likely impact my final decision:

- I'm in the south of the city (Bonavista). A drive to the opposite end of the city is not a deal breaker, but all things considered, closer is better
- On average I think I'll probably shoot about once a month
- Initially I'll be shooting mostly handguns but I will be getting back into hunting again so long guns will also factor-in down the road
- Secure, onsite storage may be important
- I want a friendly, safe place to shoot

I've done a fair bit of research but I'd like to hear from anyone who shoots pistols in this city - where do you shoot and why?

Cheers,
Stu

I usually shoot in the calgary shooting center

I have a membership at Calgary Shooting Center and it works out good for me. I have also been at the Shooting Edge which is also fine but I find the Shooting Center fits me better. If you haven't already done so I suggest you go to each place at different times during the week to see if it makes any difference to you of which fits you better.

TSE for years because it was the only indoor, easy to get into range (membership-wise, as well as hours to access the range). Things have changed though and myself, as well as a few other shooting buddies, are reconsidering Calgary Shooting Centre. Either option is 500-600 bucks a year though.

There are a handful of other indoor and outdoor ranges in the area each with their own pros and cons as well. As nice as it would be to get into the Shepherd range and shoot restricteds outside it isn't exactly easy to get into. I think we dismissed the one by the airport due to it's hours, as well as the much smaller indoor ranges in Okotoks and Airdrie for similiar reasons.

Calgary Shooting Center or The Shooting Edge are your only options with on site storage.

Really, flip a coin. They both have good amd bad.

CSC- cinema range ($$), newer, good selection. Only 25m

TSE-50 M rifle range. Better lighting than it was but still not as modern.

Try both and see which you like.

Calgary Shooting Center is my indoor range preference.

Calgary District Target Shooters Association is not far from you and is an outdoor range. Membership will be opening up in the coming month. Information is on their site, just google the name. Good range, and a second range will be opening up near Milo in the near future. CDTSA is growing.

i chose the shooting edge because of the 50 m rifle bay. On the other hand, calgary shooting center lets you shoot with steel core surplus ammo.

The Calgary and District Target Shooters Association is located just SE of town. 25yd pistol bay, 100yd rifle bay, sporting clays 5 stand field and archery lanes. As well they are developing a quarter section east of the city near Milo. Lots of pistol bays, 500yd rifle lanes and shotgun fields.

Auggie D.

Hopefully a rifle and pistol bay. For CQB rifle running instead of just bench shooting from 50 and 100.

CDTSA opens the membership every year at the beginning of January, make sure you mark your calendar and apply promptly and you will get in. The Steve Johnson range is gone, as is the Airdrie range. Don't know about the Okotoks one.

There will be multiple bays that will be templated for handguns and at least carbine calibres (5.56 and 7.62x39). Being able to run 3 gun and IPSC type long gun events is one of the main goals with the new range. The bench only shooting for rifles right now at Sheperd is horrible, but what we got stuck with to satisfy the CFO with regards to ricochet control.

Thanks everyone for the replies and advice - particularly on stuff that I hadn't even considered. Also, it's good to know that outside is an option.

Cheers,
Stu

The shooting edge is great! Im a member and try to make it in once a week. Great staff and facility. JR (owner) is a really great guy, i've had dealings with him in and out of the range setting.

I'm at The Shooting Edge...I like it there [50m rifle range is great] and it's cheaper from me to renew my Edge membership than join the Shooting Centre, so that's my main criterion.

However I can shoot cheaper steel-core and steel-jacketed ammo at the Centre, so the join cost just might be worth it. Pretty much a coin toss...you should check them both out [you can get a day pass at both places] and see what they have to offer.
