i heard that a .303 enfield could have the barrel taken off and "a little"taken off the barrel ,rethreaded and put back in to accept a 7.62x39 round.if so anybody know how much?anybody ever do this?dont get too upset the rifle was a bubba special to start with ,nasty hack and slash job.

I have heard of this, and have a barrel I plan on experimenting with. More than a little has to be taken off the breech end, cartridge cases are 56mm vs 39mm long, and the remnant of the .303 chamber would have to be cleaned up. Barrel could be fitted with a Savage style lock ring, or with a machined shoulder. Then there are the issues of extractor/boltface work, and a magazine system. A reamer and gauges would be needed. $$.

Check out the website for Special Interest Arms. They offer conversions for the SMLE in 7.62 x 39 mm and .45 ACP. The only problem is that they're in the States, so getting the barrel over here could involve a lot of red tape. Gave me some great ideas, though.
