HI everyone,

I'm looking to build a custom short action precision rifle with short barrel. I want it 18". I don't know witch caliber is better than the other. I want a short action because i already buy my stock and i want to save weight. I'm now considering 308 or 300WSM. I don't have enough experience to know witch one to choice.

my build will be close to this: (open to suggestion)

ACTION: Pierce titanium short action.
TRIGGER: not choice yet.
STOCK: accuracy international AX folding on bolt side. *Already buy.
SCOPE: Nightforce Atacr 4-16x42 or NSX 2,5-10x42
SCOPE MOUNT: looking for the lightest option.

.308 would be my choice out if those two options , you should google .358 win its a decent short barrel round. All depends on what you want to do with it .

This one will be to shoot mostly on paper an pepsi can. But it will probably the one i will bring with me for moose and bear hunting.

I'm not able to find some advise on a 300wsm with 18". But i reed that the 300wsm was create for a 20" barrel

243 win, 7mm-08, 308 win, 358 win, 350 rem mag.
If I spent a lot of time in elk, moose or brown/white bear country I'd lean toward the last 2.
If whitetail deer or black bear were the biggest critters I would see any of the first 3 would do.

300blk is ideal in in short barrels shooting supersonic loads.
Soft on horsepower tho for the game you are planning to shoot.

308 is an obvious choice.
260 is a sweetheart and flat shooting, great BC and works as well as 308 in shorter barrels.
Avoid 243 or others that need lots o' barrel to burn in.

Good luck...FUN project.

Even 223/556 fast twist and heavy bullets might be the ticket too. If your going to go short go short 13/16" is perfect if your a reloader and pick a good powder

In fact now I want to build a rem 700 13" 1/7 twist mid weight barrel in a LTR stock and badger bottom metal with a 2.5/10 optic

Thanks for all answer. I know my stock choice (ax aics) is heavy and thats why i want to save more as possible on other part.

When you suggest under 18" why those one can be non-restricted ?

And what about a 300wsm it will work great in a 18" or its a bad choice like the 300winmag for a small barrel ?

Not restricted for bolt guns . The magnum calibers will have a tuff time burning all the powder
