i have a savage 116 7mm mag. I heard barrel swaps are quite simple on savage rifles so im just curious what it would take to do a caliber conversion. To my understanding it would be a new barrel and and bolt face and would need a barrel vice and headspace guage

Pretty much. If you're switching to another magnum chambering, then you just need the barrel, vise blocks, nut wrench, and headspace gauge. If you wanted to switch to a non magnum, then you'd also require a new bolt head and magazine. Once you've done it once, it's pretty simple. There are a few websites that go through the conversion step by step, so have a look around and you should have plenty of info.

Guess what? With a conventional action, without the barrel nut, changing barrels is even easier than on the Savage. You don't even need the headspace gauge because headspace is set when the barrel is fitted. The only advantage to the Savage system is that barrels can be chambered to loose tolerances because the lock-nut allows adjustment. Interchangeable bolt heads are an advantage in that they allow changes between cartridge groups.

And sometimes with the barrel nut you need the barrel vise, and action wrench and a nut wrench...

Fixed shoulder barrels and actions are much easier to work on...

Tools: Must have a barrel vice, Barrel nut wrench, steel headspace guage preferred for factory stock setting. And/or actual loading dies and brass for custom fit. Action wrench if you have it but not necessary.
Time: 15 min. Up to one hour if a barrel nut is stubborn. Apply shop rate. Do it yourself and learn under guidance from a practitioner....priceless. Next time the swap will be easier as the nut does not need to be attached by gorilla power.
No need for reamer touch ups or lathe in this operation.

Changing out and resetting a bolt face with proper pin protrusion and spring tension takes about an hour of fiddling including cleaning. Apply shop rate or do it yourself.

Op there is a lot of DIY advice out there if you want to go that route. My advice is have some one who has done the job to advise you along the way...That time will be priceless. Or do a lot of researching you tube vids before attempting the swaps.
Elky....
