Caliber remarking

Many gunsmiths will mill the old stamp out and restamp the same spot with the new cartridge. Looks ok.

This bbl was a 30-06. Now a Super 30 (300 H&H)

Just to tie off this thread. Ended up using FineLine in Edmonton. Job was OK- not happy with the attempted overcharge of $250 for "0.17 Mach II", he dropped to $150 without much argument. I would look elsewhere- but this is machined in, a guy on Leduc lasers in- which does not go as deep. I remarked directly over old caliber markings.

I usually just take them to the nearest "trophy" shop that has an engraver.

Any font you prefer and usually under $50

I tried a jeweler, another engraver no dice- too hard or wouldn't fit in their machine. I just had the rifle parkerized so didn't want to get into metal work.

The lady I take mine to, does it by hand.

She requires the "bare" barreled receiver be taken out of the stock. Sets it into her vice, sits down and in twenty minutes it's all done.

I used to use a fine, flat, bastard file to remove the original markings, then stamp the new designation into the resulting flat. She chisels it out.

I had a nice little box made up to accept the letter/number stamps, which were on 3.5mm, square handles. These provided the proper spacing.

I've misplaced that handy little box, which was made from a flat piece of Delrin.

It was easy to attach snuggly to the barrel, at the proper spot, when held in a vice.

To bad you weren't near the Regina area. I have been working on perfecting my settings the past 2 and half months since I am launching a Fiber Laser business this summer and would do it for free (for the experience).

For what I paid shipping would have taken care of itself. To be fair laser was available to me but wouldn't have etched deep enough as he 'routered' right over the existing markings. I could probably have it filled with something.

I might be interested. Have a rifle that the marking were crudely marked over. the 6 in 30-06 was scratched out.

My Laserpecker 2 can mark blued steel, but not engrave it. It is very simple to use.
I want to get a Mr. Carve, but I haven't been able to buy one.
I've emailed them twice but have had no response.
This one is capable of engraving metal.
I'll look for another one if I can't get Mr. Carve.
