Hey boys,

Buddy calls me this morning and he has been looking for a Rem model seven. Today he found two there both in great shape, now here are the calibre choices he chooses from. 300 SAUM and 7mm-08. Now he's looking for a deer & bear gun. I told him Id throw it out to you and get some feedback. I dont know alot about the 300 saum but my 7mm-08 was a great deer gun. With a bear well......!I never got around to that.

Help:eek:

HHB;)

Has anyone mentioned you two guys look alot alike?:D

Not sure of the bbl length on a model 7 but the 300saum will give you about 200fps over a 30-06 which would make it good for pretty much anything.
The one my brother in law has is the Ti model and 24" bbl, he really likes it.
I would think the carbine length bbl would bark pretty good in a 300.

7-08 would be a bit better combo IMHO and a box of ammo would be a bit easier to find. This caliber would be easier on the shoulder in a lightwieght carbine and is a nice for the work your friend has to do.

I'll go with Frank on this one, get the 7-08.;)

After owning one and using it on a few Muleys the 7mm-08 is a wicked Deer round:)
It's No slouch for the odd BlackBear too;)
Given the Two choices I'd go with the Lil 7 as well:cool:
Unless Grizz and Buffalo are on the menu but then there's better choices then the 30 SAUM for that too:D

unless he handloads, go with the 7mm-08

A 140 Partition in 7-08 will do in most any black bear with ease, properly placed

300saum will give you more bullet (and recoil) handloads can go up to 220 grain Partitions

The 300saum will probably fade away due to lack of sales, but the 7mm-08 will be around for a long time.

This is the entire issue in a nutshell. The short-action ultra-mags are fading away as they have little to offer over the WSM's that got on the market earlier. On the opposite side of the argument, the 7mm-08 is becoming more popular with each passing year and allows a lot more variety in factory loads and reloading components

7-08
More versitile, easier to shoot due to lower recoil and has lots of power for black bear and deer. This cartridge will be around for a long time too. IMHO

I'd go SAUM, but only because it'll be totally obsolete and nearly non-existant. In a decade, you'll own one of the very few out there.

Can the WSM/SAUM actions be converted to fire a standard SA cartridge? Or will the SAUMs slowly be converted to WSMs?

Need another for the 7-08?;) great deer and bear gun
As for LBL's question,I wish I knew. I would not want to buy one and find out I was in another short lived remington flirtation scenario (Etronix)

WSM & SAUM are almost identical. One could form SAUM brass from slightly shortened WSM brass. Or, you could probably run a WSM reamer into a SAUM gun

I'd go for a 7mm-08,it's a pretty good all around caliber. SAUM will be a tough one to find ammo for & in a few years probably a forgotten caliber

7mm-08...

7mm-08 for sure... It will do everything he needs it to do. ;) The .300 SAUM is a good round but it's been eclipsed by the .300 WSM. Down the road the 7mm-08 will hold it's value but since the .300 SAM will be an obsolete ctg by then the same may not be true. I'd take the 7mm-08... :D

I've used the 7-08 in a Rem mod 7 for years. Really a fine all around carteidge, in either handloads or factory form. The combination rifle/cartridge works fine on everything from coyotes to deer, elk, and large northern Canada moose. I can personally attest to all of those. Go with the 7-08, especially if you'e a little recoil shy. The ammo is also cheaper and available in almost every store and gas station that carries ammo. That can't be said for the SAUM. It doesn't matter how much power a centerfire cartridge produces, if you don't hit the animal properly, it'll run away anyway. bearhunter

7mm/08

I noticed a few years back the metalic sillouttte shooters changed to the 7mm/08 from .308 win, the 7mm has more longrange power

7mm/08 would be my choice, but I have downed sized and sold many guns and built one and it is great 7mmwsm
