Thinking about a new build, first decision is going to be calibre. I currently own a 6.5x.284 and love it, for simplicity sake, I have been thinking about keeping with the 6.5. Possibly a 6.5x47 or a 6.5 Creedmoor. I am thinking that a short, heavy barrel (16- 18" 1-1.25" profile) on a single shot bolt action is going to be the way to go. I would like to shoot for 300 yard effective range.

My question is, how do the ballistics compare between the 3 primary 6.5 chamberings? Which would be the best fit for a short barrel rifle?

That's a pretty short barrel and will give you a lot of muzzle blast. "The 3 primary chamberings" is slightly vague...Currently popular are the 3 in your post 6.5-284, 6.5 Creedmoor, and 6.5x47L. However the 260Rem is hugely popular as a hunting round and chambered in more factory rifles, and the 6.5x55 Swede is the oldest and most widely chambered. I would list them by case capacity and probably go with the lowest Case Cap if you're using that short of a barrel. The 6.5x47 also uses small rifle primers(don't know if you're set up for them).

Have fun,

I would recommend the 6.5X47. I don't have a lot of experience with it as I only have 100 rounds through mine. But it is such as pleasure to shoot. Have only shot out to 815 yds so far but holds under half MOA. I would go 6.5X47 or 260 just for the Lapua brass. Don't see much love on most sites I visit for the 6.5X47; but a 130 Berger right at 3000 fps with only 42.2 gr of H4350 is awesome.

I'm gonna agree with Ar180 here. 1:9 twist .223 and 69gr matchkings over your choice of at least 10 different powders. Doesn't get much simpler than that.
