Hi, im still waiting on my rpal to show up, but have been looking at various restricted firearms. Im having problems deciding which calibre is best for me. I plan on buying a .22 handgun as im new ro shooting and want a cheap way to get started and hone my skills. However my question is, is this a good idea? Ive wanted a 1911 forever but cant decide if i want to buy a .22 or the .45 to start off with. I plan on getting into reloading but would it be better to start off with something smaller? I know i could buy the .45 and get the .22 co version kit, would that be a better move so when i get sick of shooting .22 i could gi back to .45? Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I personally would suggest a .22 Besides the fact that the ammo is cheaper than popcorn, its easy to keep a sight picture and followup shots are easy because of the low recoil. Its quiet, its cheap, its fun to shoot, its nearly guilt free because of these things.

Of course we all want more than that eventually, so after that I suggest see if you can rent or borrow other shooters firearms and try them out. not all .45s or 9mm etc shoot the same. You might hate, say a Kimber .45 but love it in another manufacturers frame.

I suggest a 9mm as your second gun too, but if you are strong and have a fair amount of money, and you really want to go for the .45 then get it. It is expensive to shoot and buy(in comparable quality to a 9mm), its loud and it kicks pretty good, from my experience. I know I enjoyed shooting the 9mm pistols I have shot, whereas I am glad I have shot .45 for the experience and training, but I prefer 9mm. Of course the .45 is more powerful and fun in that alone, not taking away anything from it, but I am not sure its for a first time shooter.

But don't take mine as the only advice please. I am new here. I am not completely new to shooting, but I don't have any of the experience that some on here do.

A friend of mine got the 45 with the 22 conversion kit and he likes it because it's the same feel/weight/sights that he gets used to, so when he does break it out as a 45 there is no adjusting to something different (other than the recoil)
