Calibre opinions

I must be your polar opposite...I tend toward the 45s...455 Webley, 45 Colt, 45-70.

I been down that road but couldn't make the same bullet perform well in 450Rev and 45-70...I can, have and do use the same cast bullets in all the previously mentioned 44's (plinking rounds in the 444)

I always have at least one 45 cal as I will never be without a 45-70.

Hell, I've got three 45-70's and they all take a different bullet and powder. Might as well throw a few more loads in there as well while I'm at it. At least they all take the same lead alloy!

I've got the .44 magnum Winchester Lever and I would trust it for hunting with the right load. However, I've got a Uberti .45 colt old 1873 style pistol and it's one of my favorite range guns. I enjoy my .44 magnum handgun as well but like the .45 colt more. I would have both calibres in your collection as they are two of the best IMHO.

I have a Ruger new Vaquero as well as a Rossi Ranch Hand in 45 Colt and a Marlin lever 1895 in 4570. The 45 colts are a blast at the range. For hunting pretty hard to beat the Marlins oe even my H&R Buffalo Classic in 4570.

Well, Let's say 95%. Straight bolt, not drilled and tapped, flag safety and case hardened action aren't quite up to par with modern options, but otherwise, yes, you are right.

Yeah, they tinkered with the original designs, but there have been very few groundbreaking advances, the AR-15/M16 being a possible exception. Even the AK design is over 70 years old, older if you accept that it's based on the StG44.

Let's go middle ground at 98%... as the latter K98 has a bent bolt and strong enough action to handle 30-06+. The Norwegian K98 post-war conversions gave me a new opinion on the sights as they work quite well for me, and thus, I actually quite like the flag safety. :) Hey, no case hardened comments... I thought we got over that? lol

Mausers came with straight or bent bolts right from the start depending on whether the user was infantry or cavalry.

The flag safety (which is very good) was at the insistence of the customer, the German Army.

Lack of drilling and tapping isn't really much of a design flaw.

Materials have improved in the last 100 and some years, but it could certainly be argued that design hasn't.
