as stupid as those monster man grips look at least California laws are based on features and not something as ridiculously arbitrary as prohibiting based on a firearms name but i am glad that in canada an ar can still be an ar and not some strangely deformed creature

IIRC, it's an either/or

You can have a detachable magazine provided you have no other evil features (pistol grip, flash hider, bayonet lug, etc.)

OR

You can have all the evil features you like, but give up the detachable mag.
