Hey guys has anyone ever had a call from RCMP regarding there upgrade to RPAL. My reference had a call and then they called my house but both of us were helping a friend move. I know they call references but I never knew they called the applicant. Anything to worry about? Now I cant call them till Monday, gonna be a lovely weekend.

It is just to go over your application.

They will ask you to confirm your name, address, date of birth, they may ask you to confirm your references info, ask you how long you have known them, and they will ask you the questions you answered on the app about being charged with a crime in the last 5 years, have you suffered bankruptcy, job loss ect, ect.

Nothing to worry about.

They followed up on all of my references and fired a barrage of confirmation questions at them when I upgraded. No biggie, they are just following the rules and guidelines set out by their superiors.

You should be able to call them tomorrow, as far as I know they are open on Saturdays.

I'm just reaffirming what others have said....when I upgraded, I got a call at home as well, confirming everything on my application. They even re-asked all of the "are you depressed, have you had a recent marital breakdown, etc...". Based on feedback that I've heard from other friends who recently upgraded as well, this is the standard.

They call everyone including you. There is a short-list of questions or sometimes a longer list. I don't know what the trigger is for the long-list of questions, but either way its not like they are trick questions they are either going to ask you to confirm things you already told them on the application OR as you a bunch of yes-no questions concerning overtly illegal and concerning activities surrounding firearms behavior.

I applied for PAL and RPAL at the same time, and they didn't call me or my spouse. I guess some cops have better things to do.

After the Dawson shooting they started more carefull screening of applicants.

Prior to that, peoples applications saw little verification. Most references were never called.

Now they are checking into people a little.

I think its a good thing.

Thanks guys that makes me feel better. Even though I had nothing to worry about I just wanted to make sure it was just procedure. I so much want a S&W semi auto in .40cal and then some more toys.

I got the rpal call at work the other day. Mostly went over the list of questions on the application that you don't want to have to say yes to. Divorced, depressed, drugged/boozed or fired recently.

We'll see. I'm not really worried about it.

Do you mean the Dawson College shootings, Sept. 13 2006? That was 7 months before I applied for my PAL/RPAL.

Got my RPAL last november. They called my references. They also called me, and basically asked me to confirm my name, address, and asked most of the yes/no questions from the application. They also asked for a reason why I wanted to own restricted firearms.

Seems to be more or less standard procedure nowadays, they did the same with 2 of my friends who applied at the same time as I did. Nothing to worry about.

The head scratcher that I have on the RCMP call was them asking me if I'd been arrested or charged with any offenses etc. Uh...you're the police...you have my information...why are you asking me, isn't this something that YOU should have access to?

Uh...isn't that why you fill out the form??? Anyways, they never called me or my references...this was a few years ago however.

Don't worry about it they seem to do that for everyone these days. When I applied for my license 16 years ago I think I could have filled out my dog's name on the application and they would have approved it.

Don't try to make any sense of it... because there aren't any to be found! By the way, you are called by bureaucrats, not RCMP officer.

I had a good chuckle a few years ago, I sold a gun to a friend... and the CFC called me to see if I approved of the transfer (because I was the guy's reference)... Seems like they never put 2 and 2 toghether ;)

... Believe it or not, but, sometimes people lie to the Police, and even harder to believe perhaps, but sometimes, people "forget" to mention embarrassing little details, like a Criminal record, so as routine measure, the opportunity is often given for someone to "correct" their "oversight"! ... David K. ....;)
