Calling all .22 mag lovers, what do you like about the caliber?

Don't get rid of it. It is good on any of the small critters.

I too sold too many guns over the years that I regret. I have been searching for the last 4 years for a Tikka Continental Varminteer in 17 Rem. I sold that too fast for too cheap!

I've got a Savage M-93 stainless barrel, composite stock, TufForce Premium High Ring Mounts @ 20mm Saddle Height, and a Burris Fullfield II 3 x 9 with the Standard Plex. In other words... nothing special.

I was recently out with my grandson a few days ago doing some target shooting at 50 yards. Keep in mind that I haven't used this little rifle a great deal but was hitting the target near dead centre with Hornady 30 grain V-max ammo. So I figure when my grandson isn't around to distract me (not that I mind) when I can be more relaxed shooting, I can focus on what I'm doing a little more. Perhaps even take it back to 100 yards. And, after that, I'd still like to try a few more brands of ammo like the remington soft points, which I've found in the past were always fairly accurate too.

But having recently changed the mounts, and having run a few boxes of Mag ammo through the pipe. It seems like, either I'm shooting better due to a break in period. Or, I'm getting used to the set-up and performance of this humble little rifle.

Now I know a lot of guys do their target shooting and show some pics on the CGN site here. So, I'll go out on the next nice day (it's snowing here today and fairly breezy) and do some shooting and take a few pics a put em up for review.

And yea a 22 Mag is kinda like a must-have rimfire, as it will always gives a liitle more range for rabbits and is a fair starting point for yotes at reasonable yardages.

I'll do the same, but expect they'll be not much to write home about.

If I get 1.5 inches at 100 I'll be surprised. Just under 2 inches is what I'd be expecting.
 
Unless you need money don't sell a 9422M. It was the first .22 mag i every fired many years ago and it left an impression on me.I'm sorry right now for selling my last .22 mag, a H&R 700 to my friend who had bugged me for years for it. Filling in the hunting role of the rimfire genre there is nothing better than a .22mag. Cost for hunting rounds is marginal. For all out plinking pleasure Mr.22LR please though!;)
 
i had a 9422M years ago and found it to be a real good jack rabbit stopper. a beauty little rifle , wish i had kept it but you know how it goes.

i recently filled that void with a henry in 22mag. it is my dog walking gun cuz there's a lot of coyotes and at this time of year they pack up. and farmers don't get nervous when they see it... and it's not too noisy... and who wants to pick up brass in 3 feet of snow.

i just happened to walk into SIR/cabelas in winnipeg and they were running an "in store" special, so i bought my henry.

it MAY be just as good accuracy wise as the 9422M but it doesn't have the same "soul".
but it's what i have and it's ok. with the reciever sight it'll do
1 1/2-2" @100 yards and that's all the accuracy i have ever gotten out of a 22mag.

22mag isn't as accurate as 22Rf or .17HMR, but don't tell the coyotes that.

Practical .22 mag owner. Someone who understands their virtues compared to the .22LR:agree:

I am in the same situation as you but the 9422M was my grandpa's gun that was passed down to my uncle. I loved that 9422M but I had no chance of getting it.
I must admit the henry 22mag lever is nice and smooth but the CCI TNTs weren't the best performers at 100 yards. I got around 3" groups with 10 shots. Not bad but could be better. I am trying to locate some CCI V-Max shells but here in Edmonton it doesn't seem like anyone has them.
What ammo do you find works best in that Henry? Sorry for jacking the thread temporaly.
 
I only have one 22 WMR - so far. It is an old Mossberg 351K(?). I can't wait to get it out in a gopher patch. I bought it second hand at Merritt, BC this summer. It had a funny little old scope on it.
 
Don't sell it. They are really nice guns that are getting more and more scarce.

I've not owned one but got to try a friend's 9422M last summer on gophers. Any squeak I put the front sights on got hammered.

I was quickly sold on the 22 mag and the 9422M.

But as mentioned, trying to find one these days is by virtue of being in the right place at the right time. The 9422's are even hard to find these days.

So hold onto yours!
 
As I am too lazy to reload large amounts of .223, the .22WMR provides enough power to tear up a gopher at 150 yards and allows a confident shot at a coyote or badger should they appear on the scene. Anything that requires more juice than that will probably get the .270
 
My first firearm was a single shot Savage .22 WRF Magnum. Then I got into target shooting and had to use .22LR. I owned some accurate and beautiful LR rifles. But when I gave that up and moved back to field shooting I realized how much more authority a .22 magnum provides over a LR. Also I find it much easier to handle the individual rounds due to their grreater length. I have retained my "Best" .22 LR but all my practice shooting now is done with a .22 magnum bolt gun.
