I purchased these 2 colt revolvers from the Wolverine supplies surplus sale. They were advertised as .38 special but I dont think thats what they are. Can any of you tell me what ammo these take. Can I fire .38 special from them?
These being .38 special is the only reason I bought them. If there not then im going to be a little p***ed off.
Also what model is the COLT D.A 38? It was advertised as a new army&navy but it doesnt say that anywhere. Its the one with the medalian in the grip.

The Colt DA .38 COULD (I say COULD) be a New Army & Navy model. IIRC the model was marked on the bottom of the grip frame. I think it should have a year of manufacture and model there.

the one with the medalian in the grip is a colt new army navy Colt 1892 in 38 LONG COLT NOT SPL!!!

This is mine. But mine is made to shoot 38 spl with Smokeless cylinder and new colt official police 4" barrel

If you tell us the s/n we can tell you the year. By the looks of it , 1895-1906 & if you need parts for it i have lots forsale.

And the other one ( army special ) Is 38 spl.

Thanks for the help guys. Little dissapointed that the D.A is not .38 special but atleast the other on is. On the bottom of the D.A its marked 194102. Is this gun a double action only? It works in double action good but the hammer doesnt catch for single action. Like its not supposed to. I pulled the side plate off the D.A and as you can see its hurting a little. Hasnt had oil in probably 50 years. Starpus ill be in contact with you soon for some parts.

she is made in 1903, And Yes they are DA & SA

your also missing your Cylinder Stop & Spring But you dont need this part to shoot the gun.

How Was the Lockup on the Gun ?

There are NO Gun smith in Canada that i know of that will take on that gun. your Best bet would be to clean it REAL good and see if you can get her going.

Greyman: I don't know what you paid for those two Colts, but here's my 2 cents for what it's worth. . I would recommend returning both to Wolverine and re-purchasing one Colt revolver in very good to excellent condition. If they adverised them as 38 spl., and they're not, they should take them back.

I'm certainly not going to tell you those two Colts are swell when they look pretty rough. In my experience I see nothing but heartache and wasted money for you trying to get those two old revolvers into shooters. The inside of the one looks just terrible with the outside looking just as bad or worse . . Even if you do get them functioning, I would suspect the timing to be way off and then there's the condition of the bore. .

Lord have mercy these guns are over a hundred years old,Made by possibly the best gun designer ever.Clean them up gently and marvel at the workmanship. If you want something to shoot get a cheap ass gun made in China by a six year old.

The cost doesnt bother me that much but just the new army navy not being .38 special kinda ruins it a little. The army special works good and has a good bore. Also the cylinder has good timing and locks up tight to. I think i might keep the army special and sell the other. I am not set up for reloading yet so I cant make .38 long colt.

The second colt is a New Army. That is the first generation of swingout cylinder Colt double action and there should be a collector out there who wants it. These were made in New Army, New Navy and New Marine. Only the Marine is in .38Spl. These have a counter-clockwise cylinder rotation, which is unique in Colt revolvers. They also have a positive lock action which avoids the problem of the 1873 single action where the hammer rested on the firing pin and thus the pistol was usually carried with an empty chamber under the hammer.
