After years of chirping and taunting F Class shooters I am now facing the fact that I may have to go to the dark side. Long story short, 18 months ago I suffered a life altering injury to my left shoulder (right handed shooter). Injury resulted in surgery involving a plate and 11 screws to hold everything together. I now have limited range of motion above shoulder height this does not allow me, at this point, to get into a prone shooting position using iron sights and a sling. I am still working on getting back to shooting TR (very painful at this time) and not ready to give up, however I may have to shoot F Class for a while.

So...I am looking for a scope but really don't know where to start. I am only interested in hearing form people that shoot F Class. I do not want a scope that is full of hash marks, Christmas trees, mildots or ranging crap. I will be dialing in come ups and dialing on wind and of course shooting from 300 yards to 1000 yards. In a perfect world (as far as a TR shooter goes) something that moves the POI up and right with clockwise movements on the dials would be great but I don't think anyone makes a scope like this. So what scope are all the cool kid F Class shooters using these days.

My other alternative would be to slap on a bipod and just shoot iron sights.

I do not intend to change my TR prone stocks but being a tool maker I could alter them to shoot F Class. Also no caliber change at this time. Rifles available for this project are CG Millennium in a Reiben prone stock, a Barnard in an Elisio prone stock both in .308 with 30 inch barrels or a Rem 700 in a .223 in a McMillan Prone stock.

So what is out there for scopes that will fit my needs?

And sorry for all the chirping and taunting over the years.

Old George created F class because he'd been in a car accident and the surgeon reset his broken shoulder a few degrees off. He couldn't get behind a rifle to same way, and he knew he wasn't going to be competitive. But he loved the sport, and he talked up F class so well, look at what happened. I had to honour of firing some of his ashes downrange in the 90s at Burdick Range near Moose Jaw.

Sorry to hear about your injury. Some scopes will have hash marks on the reticles and that is all that is offered most will have a dot or a crosshair still you can just ignore the hash marks. I don’t know of any scopes that move up and right CW everything in the scope world is CCW. It all depends on your budget and weight limits. If you are dealing look at each scopes max windage you will want 40+moa so you will have 20 left and 20 right. You can get away with 1/4moa turrets but 1/8moa is better especially for elevation it will help keep you inside the 5 ring. The v bull and 5 is smaller than you are used to so it is important to have good vertical. Most guys will be shooting at 20-40 power the mirage will play a big factor in what power you shoot on.

Take a look at the Kahles 10-50, Nightforce Competition, Nightforce NXS or NX8 (mostly1/4moa), Vortex Golden Eagle, Sightron S3. Will really depend on your budget Nightforce tends to have the best glass. Kahles has 20 moa per turret revolution if you are dialing especially at Connaught where you can have 12 or 15 Moa of wind on the gun. Weight will also be a factor most of the scopes mentioned will be 30-40 oz fully setup with rings and sunshades. I would recommend the Nightforce Ultralite rings as they are good quality and the lightest rings on the market weighing about 4oz for a pair. With the prices of scopes these days I would keep an eye on the EE, still lots of time until May.

Your stocks will be fine I’m sure you have anschutz rails on the fore ends to mount a bipod. The heel on your stocks should work with a rear bag most FTR stocks are a variation on the prone stocks. You may have to get a bag rider for your elisio stock but I’m pretty sure he sells one or you can make one like you said.

Bipods again weight will be a deciding factor but look at the Joypod, Dublin, Phoenix, and the Dolphin bipods. The Phoenix bipod is a bit heavy weighing in around 2lbs, the other ones will be 18-20 oz. If you are using your TR rifle you have weight to spare and could look at a Remple bipod, most people don’t use them because they are so heavy you would have to build your rifle around it.

For rear bags protector, Edgewood, and Seb are the main ones. The consensus is to get the ear spacing wide enough that the stock will ride the stitching. The stock will sit on the flat part in between the ears. Cordura ears seem to be the best as the 3M slick material wears too fast.

Hopefully that helps.

Hi Maynard.

I am sorry to read about your injury and the horrible fate of having to shoot F-TR for a while. :p

As a long time F Class hooter I offer several recommendations based on personal use and observation of others in the sport. All are expensive as the clarity of the glass is truly important to read and see through the mirage.

You will want something with high magnification. Most of the time I have my scope set at 45 -50 magnification. Combined with a 1/8 MOA centre dot I can pick my corner of the V bull at 1000 yds when holding for conditions.

Here are some good options:

Schmidt and Bender 12-50x56 PM II with Sport Fine reticle. 34mm tube. It has a fine center 1/8 MOA dot and 1/8 MOA adjustments. This is the scope I use. The Schmidt has the clearest glass of any scope I have looked through. Available with CCW or CW turrets.

March 10-60x56 High Master. 34 mm tube 1/8 MOA adjustments. Note that March aslo makes a different spec 10-60 with lesser quality glass. Don't confuse the two. March uses very high quality ED glass in the High Master series. Available with several choices of target reticles. MTR -2 is probably the one to get.

Nightforce competition 15-55x52 Has a 30m tube so light transmission is lower and field of view is smaller than the two listed above. Several competition suitable reticles to choose from.

Kahles 1050 (10-50x52) 30mm tube. only one reticle choice. MOAK.a fine crosshair with dot centre

Vortex Golden Eagle 15-60x52 HD. Again a 30 MM tube. MOA target reticle.
