I know the electronic callers work like a hot damm...but....
Does anyone use hand callers anymore? How do they work for you?

I picked up a couple to try my hand at it, in the new year... practicing at home is driving the dogs absolutely nuts! They're running all around the house trying to figure out what's going on, where's the dying rabbit!
:dancingbanana:

the Sceery snowshoe is a good sounding distress call, and the Dan Thompson Red Desert howler is the best Ive used. Ive called more yotes in with mouth calls than electronics :D

I have and Use Hand Calls :) A Fox Pro is On my Must have list though;)
Just started this predator thing last winter so I'm still very much learning myself.

I almost always get replies when Howling and did manage to call in a few last year with distress rabbit wails, but they always held up just beyond my Hornet's reach or heckled me from the timber

This year armed with more Experience, some much better Callers, extra time to get out more often, and a rifle with abit more "reach" a 223, I should fair abit better and Hopefully will Take a Coyote that I actually "Called" in :)

I'm a hardcore dog hunter, and I have no intentions of buying an electronic call (too damn fun using hand/diaphragm calls, and just as effective in my experience).

My favorite is a triple reed elk diaphragm call... use it for howls, barks, pup in distress, and even rodent vocalizations.

I also use a Sceery howler, a Faulks rabbit in distress, and a Primos doe bleat call (sounds like a dying rabbit)....and have a Randy Anderson big dog and ki yi on my Christmas Wish list -(hope Santa's listening) (grin).

I don't know Cat the alberta regs seem pretty clear if there is a loop hole it's damn small.

I don't discount that electronics work but I have a huge problem with the price hundreds of dollars to automate what can be done with a $20 mouth call, for me other kit is way up the list for me, there is just not enough upside to justify the cost.

My current favorites are the promos Randy Anderson line I have the Hot dog Lil'Dog and the Ki-Yi. The Lil'Dog gets the most work at this point, but darn near any reputable company makes a usable call, my partner uses Sceery the distress calls are great the howler is OK.

There are two areas where a e-caller would be worth it heavy bush or cats

Only advantage I see to electronics is to be able to have them set up remotely so one can shoot at long range. For this reason I wish Alberta would legalize them.
Bigger $$$ though.....

I do enoy using my FoxPro but my favorite hand call is a Red Desert Howler, I actually just ordered one of the new ones that are a shorter version, can't wait to try it out.
If you do want a good hand call get one with an open reed, way more versatile in the sounds you produce.

Happy coyote hunting!!

How do you keep the calls from freezing during cold weather??
There are some that are small enough that you can kkeep them in your mouth, but I LIKE to keep them on a lanyard inside my jacket, call, then put them back in.

Good info guys, thanks for all the responses.

I read some interesting stuff about calling - how does it match up with your experiences?

=
Rabbit and other critter distress calls... rabbits lungs are a tiny fraction of the size of a humans, so remember to keep the calls short and not overly loud to be realistic.

Does this really matter? I tried a few calls while out snowmobiling yesterday, and if you really want to, you can have this call echoing for a long ways down a frozen lake or meadow. Maybe coyotes are afraid of the 200 lb Rabbit in distress!

Boonerbuck likes to set up in the middle of a field, rather than off in the edges - how do you set up?

Ideally set up so you can cover the most likely direction a yote will come in, from hard right to hard left. you wont be able to cover behind you so maybe put your back to the area most unlikely for a yote to come from. of course they will still sneak in the back door

keep the downwind side a large open area so when they circle down to catch the wind, they have to expose themselves if they want to do so

We got abunch of wolves running around the island here!

Will they come to a Call like a Yote?

I know they love to eat little Puppies so maby a Tape of a bunch of Little Puppies Crying would work eh? :D

calling a hound in

National geographic will probably sue me if they new, but when I was learning how to howl in a wolf I used the national geographic documentary works like a hot damm, also have a couple of carlton screechers they also work like a hot damm. I work as a culler for F&W and can tell you right know there is no loop hole for using electronic callers in Alberta, would love to give it a try though but it would probably take somthing away from the hunt anyone can press a button
