Calling in Moose

Best condition for calling is no wind.

Frosty mornings in late Sept. are best.....when the leaves are falling.

Overcast ,fog, misty days

Find a secluded spot.

Lakes, marshes, beaver ponds.

Soft cow calls at first legal light.

Wait 15 minutes between calls.

Water splashing, urinating in water,.

Be patient and wait.

Try to stay upwind and out of sight of beavers and squirrels unless you want them slapping their tales and chattering at you all day long.

As morning or time passes increase loudness and put some emotion into calling.

Lots of times Cows are being harrassed by immature bulls and they are calling to more mature males to come to rescue.

So If a Bull comes into 200 yards and you hear him raking.....thrash brush as well, and mix in some bull grunts.

Otherwise he might get suspicious....

Sometimes, IF they have been called in the past or earlier in the season they will slip in silently from downwind toncheck for scent....so its handy to have a partner 100 yards downwind.

If you dont get a response dont assume a Moose isnt on the way.

Keep.working that area for at least a few days IF you seen good sign or have seen Moose.

I like to change calling spots by a few hundred yards.

Good luck.

I head out for Archery Moose on Friday....the funnest hunt of the year.

Look up a guy named buck bowden on you tube. Try to sound like him. I only cow call no bull sounds. But I shoot any legal bull and don't hold out for big ones. Mind the wind and be quiet. Listen carefully.

Just b careful when calling, no matter how secluded you are. You bring in all kinds of things, I have gotten a few bears. Some times other hunters which is a whole other thing. Be safe

A loud fart can call in a bull. Theyre probably the easiest thing in the bush to bring in.

Dont spend a penny on a call. If you want something, the most basic of funnels will do.

Cup your hands, pinch your nose with your fingers, and let er go. Listen to a youtube video for the general sound. If you start to cough youre blowing too hard.

I'm no pro and I haven't put dozens of moose in the freezer like many here but I do seem to have a knack for calling in moose.
Most of my hunting has been just after the main rut so tactics are different I guess. I like to get into an area, let it settle for 1/2 hour to an hour and then I will let out a broadcast call..... long and lonely .... like a cow wondering how she got missed in the first round LOL
I will stick around for 4 or 5 of those calls spaced 20 minutes or so and if no response is heard, I'll start moving and hunting elsewhere. I will return to that initial calling spot every morning as if I was a moose that is habituating the area. I will almost always slip into that favorite calling spot at dusk as well and lay down a couple mournful cow calls as the sun sets and legal shooting light ends. Many times that first broadcast call of the morning is answered quickly by a grunt within a few 100 yards of the call hide.... and then the game is afoot hehehe

Love calling in animals and wish I could do a whole lot more of it

When I was learning I listened to moose calling videos that were part of a series of videos released under Ontario Outdoors productions..... the techniques seem to work on BC moose just fine. Pretty sure all the videos are on youtube from that series.

One thing I know from over the years and hearing lots of cow moose in the bush. Most people call too much.
When I hear cows in the bush their calls are usually never closer then 20 min apart
Bull grunts are more frequent intervals especially if they are coming in to a cow call.

Some great advice already listed.
Watch your wind, and move after calling if by yourself, or place your hunter out to the cross or downwind side from where you are calling as the moose will come to the very tree you are calling from, from the downwind side. (or caller upwind from you, as the circumstances dictate)
For added realism that will draw that bull in the last bit if he is call shy, the Montana cow moose decoy sprayed with cow in estrus scent works well; give them what they are expecting to see when they get there - especially helpful when bowhunting!
