Camo discussion

I wear camo for the waterproof and quietness of the suits, not the pattern. I'm sure if you wore green/khaki/grey shades you'd have the same outcome.

Has anybody ever seen any articles or scientific data that either supports or dispells the usefullness of camo?? I've always worn it based on trying to be better concealed, broken up with blended patterns vs solid light colored materials. Could just be psycological but its a billion dollar + yearly market.

Just my opinion,

When it comes to camo and patterns it all depends on the person that is in it. Some move alot, some sit good and still. As some here talk about the wind and playing it right and as well the location of stand at the time and ligthing of the hours at the time all play a role in how clothing works at the time of your hunt.

If the wind is still and nothing is moving and a camoed hunter is moving around deer are going to pick them out, over a hunter that can sit still. This also goes for tree stand hunting. Next time your in a tree, look up and check out the branches on the tree your in when you move. When your the only tree moving out there then you stand out.
Some wind helps this because there is movement all over so then you fit in better if you move alot.

Camo patterns help as what was said about breaking up the cylinder shape as long as you fit in to your location. Hunter Orange should be broke up as well in a setup location by using a blind type or foilage type straight look from the games direction. I don't mean hiding completely just breaking up your outline in the direction you expect to see the game.

As far as this UV crap. Sorry I can not believe any of it. I do not use any UV killers however I do wash hunting clothing in Non scented soap, like Tide "Nature" . My opinion on this is that what game see on a hunter is not clothing glowing but rather the glare off of a solid colour like Hunter Orange in movement.

If a hunter is setup properly with the wind and the natural cover, deer are going to catch the movement of the excitement and getting ready, over a still object not moving whether your in a tree stand or on the ground. The moment of movement with a solid colour is going to create a flash of glare in the solid colour and this is what a deer will pickup over the glow in the dark stuff.

Distance plays another very big role in whether game can see you or not. The closer you are to game the better chance of them catching the movement of you. Camo Hides the close up hunter better as they may have to ready for a shot over the hunter orange that is going to be harder to make a move without being caught by the game.

Movement and Sound, are the two biggest friends of any game animal...

Since deer are colour blind, it would only be advantageous to the point that camo clothing is more flexible, breathable, etc etc. The colour has no effect.

While deer may be colour blind, they don't see the world as one shade either. The big advantage that camo offers is breaking up the outline of the hunter. Good camo is comprised of vastly contrasting shades that turn the wearer from one large blob into several smaller parts.......

Camo is most effective when used in conjunction with natural cover as the varying shades help the wearer blend in....of course the wearer is still a big blob in the open.

Yes, when used properly camo most definitely offers an advantage!

I also see camo as a fashion/political statement :)

Running deer and coyotes seems not to notice me at all when I wear camo, and have experienced them running within few meters from me, standing in the open, which has never happened before, when I did not wear any camo.

I wear new, surplus german army "fleck camo" jacket/parka from www.sportsmansguide.com , surplus section, which cost about $ 18.-

I think that staying still and minimizing your scent as best you can are far more important than wearing camo or not. I don't think that orange is a disadvantage when deer hunting in ON but I know this is a big country and terrain varies a lot. Plus there are just too many wingnuts out here during gun season for it to be safe to not wear orange.

I will never forget something that happened 2 years ago to me and a buddy. We were walking during deer season in ON, on a trail on private property, where we had exclusive rights to hunt, on our way to our respective posts. This was shortly after sunrise, but there was plenty of light. I hear a whistle and I knew it was a person. I also knew by the sound it was coming from very close by. So I say to my buddy "you hear that? there is someone RIGHT here", he says no, nobody here. Then there is another whistle, this time louder. We were straining to make the person out. There was no cover nearby, no leaves, bush or anything. Mature stand of trees. So then we see the guy wave his arm from maybe 30 yards away. I was almost looking right at him! Ever seen the movie predator? It was like that! Spooky. Guy was out there with his deer rifle, during the season, no orange. Told us he knew he was on private property, knew it was signed, but he wasn't hunting! Just "passing through"!!! I know camo doesn't always work that well, but it can. Guy gave us crap for wearing orange! Said, you guys are never getting anything dressed like that. Our predator eyes are better than most will give credit for too. So point is, if it can work that well to fool a person's eyes, then it must work really well for game. Sorry for straying off topic a little, don't mean to derail the discussion.
