Hi All,
Building a boat blind this year using a 12' tracker Johnboat as the base, sort of a cross between these to examples:

Far as the camo netting, right now, I'm just figuring the hunters specialties brand of camo netting, unless I can come up with a better idea:

There's a surplus store close by, I thought I'd check there in case they had anything.

Anyone think of another option?

thanks

You could make your own.
I used some burlap, and painted some flat "earthy" camo lines on it and attached it with zip ties to plastic landscape mesh. All from Canadian Tire.

Then for some definition I bought some raffia grass and dyed it different colours.

I got the raffia from this Montreal company. I called and the owner answered the phone. I told him what I wanted to do and he suggested I buy the lesser grade stuff and save some money.

I just clip on the raffia wherever I want

I can use this for a blind on a boat/canoe, field blind etc.

Avery Quick Grass comes in 4 -- 4x4 sheets per bundle -60-70 bucks
I have a 16 ft flat bottom so 2.5 bundles did her good. A collapsible frame was made from conduit painted black. here it is collapsed-

we also used Millitary surplus netting

As others have suggested Fast-Grass or Quack Grass are the best I have seen used. It tends to deteriorate over time though. If you are truly frugal you can cut and dry cattails in the spring and summer and zap strap them to plastic fencing in bunches.

Thanks again for the replies. I have so far been unable to find a supplier for the avery grass itself. It definitely looks impressive. Once I find someone who sells it, it'll come down to price.
I have found a supplier for good ole burlap at 2 bucks a yard for 5' wide, and have looked up that raffia supplier.

I'm going to keep looking for options available close by, and if I don't find something better by the time I've got the hoops built, it'll be burlap, some raffia, and the rest cattails and swampgrass(not sure the actual name, but there's lot's of it around locally). A little ragtag, but should blend well. Especially since the birds won't see anything but the shiny new mallard/goose decoys I got on sale at BassPro. :D

Going to get on it soon as the snow melts, after all, there's only 5 months till opening day. :)

I'm partial to the Avery stuff myself. This is my 2008 Lowe 1852 with a quick-set frame and the avery mesh material. I had quick grass on it but it got wet and rotted out due to some negligence on my part.

I got question, isn't it prohibited to be shooting from any motorized vehicle and or boat?
I was told you could only shoot from a canoe. Is that wrong or right?

and +1 on the landscaping mesh...you can spray paint it to suit your hunting environment and add grasses for some realism.

I dont use a boat anymore, but I use the landscape mesh for fixed blinds in a couple areas I hunt.

I have owned a few different blinds/boat combinations over the years and run everything from military netting to factory to Avery fast grass. By far the simplest and best system I have owned was a Cabelas Northern Flight blind. If you are making your own blind you can still order the mesh netting that the Northern Flight blind uses. It is a black colored heavy duty mesh netting, the holes are maybe 1/4" diameter. It is so easy to work with. Simply zip tie it to your blind frame then zip tie your fast grass mats or whatever grass you want to it. I am currently running an Avery Quick set on my Triton and using the camo netting it came with as I found the Grass Mats a pain in the ass on the Avery blind when it came to collapsing th blind for travelling. If you decide to use raffia grass it dyes well as opposed to painting it. We have bundles and bundles of raffia dyed to match green grass for our layoiut blinds. I also have some died in golden wheat color and attach it to my boat blind to blend in the wild rice.

Military camo netting is available on ebay. Just search camo net. I bought 2 5x10 nets for $55 shipped so I can either do 5x20 or 10x10. Great camo and you can't beat the price. I think the last I checked the same thing at an army surplus was over $100.
