My son and I drw tags for the second rifle hunt Dec 7-9th. The guys we planned on going with didn't draw even though we were the same priority.
We/ve never been, i understand a good method of hunting there is to push bush.
Is anybody going that week and maybe intereted in hooking up.
Send a pm or post here

I won't be there until next year Martin, but I have a small map of the camp at home, and could give you a rundown on the camp and some good areas to check out if you like.

That would be great, We were kind of setup to hunt with a group, and then the group didn't draw. I'll get a hold of you later inthe summer.

my uncle went there a few years ago and he said "never again", as it was a race with a bunch of other guys due to the check in requirements at the base.

i moved back to bc just when i got enough priority to draw for this hunt.

it would be interesting to hear what people think of the wainwright hunt.

My son (ROA) and I hunted Camp Wainwright several years ago. He tagged a nice Mule buck. We lived in Wainwright at the time so we enjoyed the hunt. Alot of people do not like hunting there as there are a lot of restrictions. After the morning check-in it gets pretty crazy as everyone heads out to be the first. Most head for the Battle River hill sides to look for Mules. There are definately big white tails in the swampy areas and the bush. If you hunt the east side of hwy# 41 you can very easly get lost in the sand hills and bush. It is a big place. One good thing is you got drawn for an early hunt.
Good Luck :)

I have hunted the camp four times for deer and once for moose. After the briefing on the first morning many people simply head for the locations that have the most kills from previous hunts shown on the map in the briefing room. There is usually a steady line of traffic out to these areas on that first morning. However if you know the area, there are several good places to hunt where various tactics can be successful, and I have never had a problem finding a place where the hunting pressure is fairly low.Learning the area,or having advance knowledge, can be a real advantage while hunting in the camp.Daily closures can also be a factor, but certain areas are generally open most of the time.

I wouldn't worry too much about not having enough people to push bush. First off, there's lots of people running around in there: find a good spot to sit and there's a decent chance somebody else's push will push something to you. There's lots of other ways that work well in Wainright too - the country's open enough for spot-and stalk to work well, and I've pulled in one or two whitetails by rattling. It can be a pretty fun hunt, good luck.

I got drawn for the first rifle season and lookin forward to getting in there....not sure how we'll hunt it but probably some bush-pushing and some still hunting mixed around depending on the country we are hunting...very excited to get in there and tag out on a couple of deer....

Most Alberta hunters know that the Wainwright hunting season is just the army's way of getting rid of unexploded ordinance and land mines and such. It costs way too much to clean that stuff up, so they invented a way of having other people do it for them, and pay for the privilege! Who says "military intelligence" is an oxymoron?

re wainwright

only apply for the first hunt. Had the last three days a few years ago and did not see any deer and yes it was like a convoy of guys heading out for the day, still was a pleasent way to have an extended hunt.

7-9 season

we will be there, but i don't know what hunting partner will want to do.we try and stay clear of the big groups. sometimes wonder if a guy should walk? lots of people with guns, that should not. last time we were there did not see a shootable(wall mount) deer. some pic's posted of big deer, not seen by us alive. moose on the other hand. we seen 9 bull moose in the first hour. walked up on the biggest bull i have ever seen alive. the last day afternoon we went to the sign in station and tryed to trade our 4 deer tags for 1 moose tag, cow, bull or calf. he would not do it. rodeo in the am but walk most of the day. dwayne and ken
