Camping and hiking/backpacking. 22lr?

Hello,

I recently bought a gsg-16 and started to do some research on many things including other .22s and found the ar-7 and thought it was a a cool design for a camping and hiking due to its small size, unique carry package and reviews claim its reliable and has decent accuracy. In my research I checked CGN and there seems to be some on here that say its not as reliable as claimed due to henry manufacturing it.

Can I ask what peoples personal experiences are with it, how does it actually perform? Is the reliability mostly due to poor care or is it a design or manufacturing issue? Are there other better alternatives that I may not be aware of?

I think you need to be more specific as to what your goals are. Ultra light weight? Super compact? Or just a decent gun that is reliable and not too heavy? Are you looking for a small game gun, or just a plinker?

If you want a semi, my vote goes to Marlin 795. They're cheap, have 25rd magazines available, last round bolt hold open, and weigh about 4.5lbs. Not the lightest, but lighter than a lot of other things. No fancy take down or whatever, but they're reliable, accurate, and affordable.

Marlin also makes a takedown model, the Papoose. (Model 70PSS) They are lighter, but there isn't much to hold onto as far as a forend goes.

Another option could be the Chiappa Little Badger (lightweight, super simple, only a single shot though). The Papoose is only a bit more weight (ounces more, not pounds) though.

I'm mainly looking for a compact, reliable and decently accurate .22 that i can carry in a back pack an would feel comfortable canoeing with. Something to plink with or get grouse if the opportunity arises. I keep a bunch of camping gear in my vehicle pretty much at all times so this would be something to add/enhance that as well.

Define compact. Does it need to fold/collapse/takedown? Or would a fullsize rifle be sufficient as long as its a smaller rifle?

I am looking mainly at takedowns right now, but am open to folding or collapsible. I want it to take up minimal space, and hopefully be low weight (though i am a bigger person and not overly concerned with weight).
 
What are there for takedown 22lrs on the market these days?

Savage 64.
Marlin 70PSS.
Henry AR7.
Browning SA22 (or norinco clones of it)

What am I missing? Out of those 3 I'd go marlin hands down. Browning is nice, but pricey compared to the rest, and the Norinco clones have spotty reputations - some people have flawless rifles, others have lots of issues it seems, reviews of them made me get the Marlin 795 over the Norinco JW20 (but I wasn't specifically after a takedown, I just wanted a cheap reliable semi) I might end up with a JW-20 at some point, the price is hard to say no to, even with the spotty reputation...

The Marlin probably has a last round bolt hold open, which isn't super common in 22s. That's an important feature to me.

That Chiappa Little Badger would fit the bill by your parameters- cheap, accurate, dead simple, and as a bonus has one of the best triggers I've seen on a factory .22 that doesn't cost several hundred dollars or more. Plus, I stumbled on a manufacturer of accessories specifically for the Little Badger that make it a lot more serviceable, and can help get rid of it's one huge failing- the cheap rear sight they put on it.

And before I forget: the manufacturer I'm talking about is Longshot Manufacturing LLC. Friendly mom and pop operation out of the US that ships up here no problem. I can supply pics of the add-ons I'm using from them for anyone interested.

Ruger 10/22 takedown. Add a Magpul X-22 backpacker stock and it stows very nicely(forestock clips into the buttstock section) and you can carry extra ammo plus some handy items in the stock.

The Chiappa Little Badger is fun and customizable and accurate. Only a single shot but with a little fiddling it folds down very small.

ar7 works, they are not a battle rifle but for general 22 stuff mine works fine
Critics pick on stock shape, fail to feed with damaged mags, lack of forward grip, sights etc, but haters hate
They aren't real fast to assemble, folding single shot beats that
 
My favorite one is pack rifle, it's the lightest of all. The next one is probably Take down Ruger 10/22 with 9 inch barrel, quite compact and can pack up with 3 x 10 rounds magazines.
 
I'm not a fan of take-downs, folders are a little better... the problem is when you need them, it is usually "right away." I backpack with one of my Browning Buck Mark Sporter carbines... usually one with a Vortex Sparc mounted. Stock down in the pack, the barrel sticks up a bit but it is light and ready to rock when I get it out.

The Pack Rifle is pretty sweet for an ultra light setup - the thing only weighs a pound!
 
In case it hasn't been said enough ... Chiappa Badger. Ours has survived canoe trips, thousands of rounds of new shooter training and multiple drops to hard surfaces. Still shoots straight and safe. Accurate as all hell, even with the cheap rear sight (although I'm Googling the vendor mentioned above as well.
 
I have a Marlin Papoose and a Chippa Little Badger and I like both of them.
I hunt Grouse with the Badger shooting sub-sonics when out deer hunting and its quiet!

Smith and Wesson made a gun for this decades ago but our insane gun laws make it illegal to toss into your "kit bag" to go hiking, camping, fishing etc.

Lower left, the S&W Model 34 Kit Gun in .22 LR or Long or Short or CB..........
