Campro plated 405gn over Black Powder in 45-70

Hi gang, I've got a latter day Remlin GBL that I'd like to put some black powder through, for the "smoke and awe" factor for my grandkids.
(yeah, and myself too, hee hee)

I've got lots of Campro plated copper bullets, so would like to use them.
I also have a pack of Ox-Yoke Wonder Wads in 45 cal.
The powder I have is Goex FFFg, and Pyrodex RS.

What I'm thinking of doing is using about 60 grains, so I don't have to compress too much to get the wad in there under the bullet.
Any good advice you can offer?
 
Just followed .45-70 Trapdoor Hornady Handbook #3 guidelines they used Pydrodex CTG it needs to be compressed they say. Pyrodex RS works fine for me.
 
With plated bullets I wouldn't even worry about a wad. Just fill the case to the base of the bullet plus 0.060" or so and seat that bullet. The Campro bullets are way harder than a normal cast bullet like we'd shoot with black powder. I doubt that you'd distort it at all when using it to compress the powder a little bit.

Don't worry too much about exact powder charges. If you are using anything from Fg to FFFg you certainly aren't going to have too much pressure. Just pick a weight or volume that fills the case a little past the bullet base and shoot 'em!!

Only thing I’d worry about with plated and BP is lube.

I’d atleast put a lube cookie under the bullet.

I have been thinking about these in .458 win mag just don’t know if they would expand at all on game.

I’ll second the lube cookie idea with an over powder card and over cookie card, you’ll find accuracy will fall off very quickly shooting dry rounds.

Was an interest of mine at one time. I discovered that the throat / leade in 458 Win Mag is much different than in 45-70. At least some makers (Jet Bullets) would make different bullets for 45-70 versus 458 Win Mag - I think because of that throat shape difference. Might not make any difference for you - I think the bullet diameters might be similar - or perhaps within a thou of each other? As I recall, the bullet weights used were similar, also. Just different shaped nose - I think.

Yes with cast in the .458 win mag you need a bore riding bullet seated to touch the lands. I was looking at the .405 as it should be long enough to not matter too much and shoot well enough for hunting. Jet hunters mold was made for .458 win mag think it was a 485gr I have data for a hard cast that weight in the win mag that will reach the 2150fps but would never use a cast bullet on anything more then North American game.

I’d use a thin card(milk carton or over shot card) over the powder then press the case mouth into a pan of solidified bullet lube and then another thin card and death the bullet.
