If ever there was a hunt that reflected the health and numbers of deer in the Aspen Parkland region of Alberta - it was this one.

Just finished my three day muzzleloader hunt. At last light (day three), the total count of deer taken was...36. Maybe a few more since I left but wow:(

Brutal. last year, that was the count before noon on day one. Bull moose are plentiful though. The elk are there (somewhere)near BACKWOODS VILLAGE off circle route but are holding up in the impact area(out of bounds). Lots of moose off Grey Route, especially behind Centurion Field. Cattalo and Buffalo West (off White Route) have had a few moose out there, too!

Being that I work and live on the base, I was subject to the landowner tags. I didn't even buy them this year and concentrated on Moose. I'm glad I didn't. I sincerely feel for the guys who waded thru the draws for there priority and have hotel rooms lined up. Theywill be truly dissapointed.

How much of the base is open right now and is there snow.I lived there for many years and sometimes it was impossible to find a deer and others easy.My last time there I checked in at noon after going to town and was back in an hour with two mule bucks. That was a while ago.

We went a few years ago after applying for 5 years and were very disappointed.

Kind of thought the whole thing was a bit of a gong show, my son and I both shot deer but neither were very good. That year there was at least two feet of snow on the ground.

Same. I've tagged out here years previous, too! Mule bucks

Very little of the base was (is?) closed. A few Perigrine sites off PURPLE, but that was it. I appreciate that weather is a factor, but when it did snow...no tracks. Moose are plentiful thought. Last winters mortality rates were severly underestimated. I'm a Pri 4 for the Camp Hunt through the AB draw systems (not to be confused with the landowner), but am gonna 999 it for a few years.

I hunted the base as well, Hakx knows me, I filled my cow tag and had the land owner tags, my partner and I saw lots of bucks but little to no does, with landowner tags we had to shoot a doe first, nothing really of trophy status but about 8 different bucks over 3 days. moose were everywhere, once again no trophies but alot of nice sized cows and bulls, I saw a 36" bull night one in the bed of a truck, and the last night we had a nice young bull at less than 50m coralling a cow. all the bucks were nose down chasing does that seemed to be doing 400mph. All in all not a bad base hunt, but wish I could of seen one doe not doing mach chicken infront of me. hope the rest of the base hunt goes well for the boys who are still left to hunt. Numbers are WAY down but if you are willing to do LOTS of walking in the bush you may fill your tags. moose hunters should not have a problem Elk hunters should head just north of backwoods village. towards the base fence, a few saw Elk in the 80 numbers, with one bull scratching his ass with his antlers!!!

All the best to those with tags hunt hard on foot and you will do okay.
