Hi, I have 870 tactical DM for 12g 2 3/4" or 3" shell. Looking to buy a barrel only handles 2 3/4". is it ok to use this barrel for 3" shell?

It'll fit... but don't touch it off! A shotgun shell is measured AFTER it is fired. So with the crimps at the end open. So a 3" will be pressed up against the forcing cone unfired.

This should have been gone over in detail during your PAL course.

I'm sure it could handle it but use a string to pull the trigger from a safe distance. Post the video here after I get some popcorn.

I used to hunt with a guy who fired 3 inch shells through his 2 3/4 in chambered 870 all the time, when I found out what he was doing he got banished from the hunting party!

The problem is that the 3 inch shells will fit into a 2 3/4 inch chamber nicely but when they are fired the hull opens up into the forcing cone. The problem is that the hull can't open all the way because the forcing cone is funnel shaped so it causes a constriction and increases the pressure to unacceptable levels. Many shooters have gotten away with it for years but if you do it enough then one day you won't!

It's easy to tell who hasn't taken the course or even really handled firearms before based on some of the questions on here.

Ha!! No doubt. I'm such a research junkie, that it is odd to me that this question would be asked. Even left wing google can answer this in a heartbeat. And if this wasn't gone over in the PAL course, the instructor wasn't doing his job.

cool guys. I was thinking maybe shell length only matters to the receiver part, not to the barrel. haha... I remember in the course it did say should match shell to the shotgun. Thank for the comments guys. I will always ask when I am not sure.

Well - You neglect to mention what make your tactical shotgun is. Some shotguns, such as Remington 870's with 2 3/4 inch chambers cannot eject a 3 inch shell, even with a 3 inch compatible barrel installed.

The chamber is the most important factor, as to which ammunition is safe in a firearm.

I've been tawt tuh match the bawrill stampings to the info awn the ammo bawx.
But then agin..........ymmv.

When I challenged the exam back when you could challenge the exam that was the one component the examiner critiqued. He explicitly told me I wasn’t obvious and deliberate enough in checking the gauge of the pump shotgun even though I had checked it. He admonished me to imagine what might happen if I got it wrong and that has never left me. Obviously it was pretty effective. Perhaps some testing is less rigorous?

I have seen the effects personally, don't do it. Also, don't use gas if it says "Diesel Fuel Only"....
