Can a 2-3/4" 870 Wingmnaster be made into 3" by only changing barrel & ejector?

I was speaking to a gun smith store while looking for a barrel for my 1978 Remington 870 Wingmaster 2-3/4" and the lady there stated that I could use 3" shells by changing the barrel and ejector, I said the hole in the receiver is not long enough to eject the shells but she said that the 870 is only pump action shotgun that you can do that. I never heard of that, I thought that using a 3" chamber barrel on my 2-3/4" designed receiver that I could only fire 2-3/4" shells, I never heard of this, anyone know if this is possible?, thank you.

Also if true how do I replace the ejector as I don't have special tools?.

Match the ammo length to the barrel and safety is not an issue. The port size is the same on the 2.75 and 3" guns. The ejector could be an issue but only on the oldest wingmasters. I've tried dozens of guns dating back to at least the early 1970s and haven't found one that doesn't eject 3" properly yet.

Told him this on another forum

If you are careful you can get away with just replacing the ejector spring and relieving the ejector spring housing. This eliminates the need to drill out the rivets and re finish the outside of the gun. You need a rivet tool from Brownells and a new ejector spring. It takes less time to do it than it takes to describe it, but if you mess it up you have no option but to drill out the rivets. Best bet is get a 3" barrel and put a round thru it before you do anything. If it doesn't work the only thing that will happen is the spent shell won't eject. If it does work then you're golden

...so why oh why are some receivers marked Magnum, some have M in the serial number...and some don't as they are 2 3/4" receivers?

No difference at all other than a little spring on the left of the receiver and the barrel chamber?

Correct, the actual receiver is identical. The reason they marked them magnum was during the transition time when both sizes were available at the same time.
