Can a bolt action rifle be fast?

Kind of a vague statement. The speed is no where near a semi, and I suspect most people who buy bolt rifles aren't looking for fast shots. Besides, if you have time to miss 5 shots quickly, you have time to hit 2 shots slowly.

How about Snoxall's 38 aimed shots (during the 'Mad Minute' practise drill) in 60 seconds from a Lee Enfield in 1914? :)

I'd be more impressed if he would have shown the target he was shooting at. Shooting fast is useless if your not hitting on target.

true. We dont know what he was hitting, if anything, but it looked to me as if he took time to aim. if he was going for pure speed he couldve gotten them off a lot faster.

I hunted with a guy many years ago whose pet rifle was an early Model 700 "carbine" [20" barrel] chambered in 270. Several times he shot 2 shots fast enough that others who heard them swore there had to be two shooters. His shots were aimed, cause he hit what he was shooting at without fail. Regards, Eagleye.

I went to CFSAC a couple of years ago and several of the stages were rapid fire. 10 rounds - 5 into each target - in 30 seconds.

I went as part of the rangers, so the rifle we used was the issued Lee Enfield. These needed to be aimed shots as the score was important.

And we were competitive with the C7s that were shooting 5 round magazines.

Just thought I'd throw that out there!

I don't think this guy could have a hit a barn...but gotta love him for trying :D

The nice thing about a bolt gun is that you don't have to wait for the gas to cycle the action. Once you get into cartridges with enough power that the recoil takes you off target, the difference between the bolt gun and the gas gun is diminished as it takes about the same amount of time to recover from recoil and get back on the target, during which time there is plenty of time to cycle a bolt manually.

I doubt that a gas gun shooter would get more aimed shots off in this drill given a rifle with similar recoil as the 270 gr Hornadys at well over 2800 that I was flinging at the moving target in the following video . . .
