Can a fiscally challenged man compete?

What about optics, mil dot or BDC? I have never used avmil dot reticle just duplex and BDC style. Mil dot looks a tad complex. I see Nikon has a P Tactical .308 4-12x40 800 BDC scope, fixed parralax. With the spot on app and 6.5 CM round, it will get you out to over 1000 yds with no math. Looks pretty simple to use.

Avoid BDC reticles, they are by design calibrated for a specific load in specific atmospherics and are good for "minute of man/deer" inside say 500 yards. Get a scope with a mil reticle (not mil-dot, that's 70's tech). There's nothing complex about mils, whatever system you use for your dope (app/dope charts, kestrel) will have your dope in mils and the turrets and reticle of your scope should also be in mils. You either dial or hold your elevation and wind.

Ok, whats the difference between a mil dot reticle and mil mil?

a mil dot reticle is an actual style of reticle designed in the 70's for (or by) the USMC. it's basically a duplex reticle with circles (dots) spaced 1.0 mil radian apart on both the horizontal and vertical stadia of the reticle. It's just very coarse compared to more contemporary reticles. Good reticles these days have sub tensions (lines) on the crosshairs at 0.2 mil intervals and might have a "xmas tree" below the horizontal axis to allow you to hold over for elevation and hold for wind at the same time. Just go look at a bunch of the reticles on the Nightforce or Leupold or whatever other scope makers website for comparison.

What???? Say it not so....no S&B...no Sphur...no 5K custom 6.5 CM rifle...I think the OP if full of sheep dip.

Like some bad Sci-fi...but the future is now! Stranger than that, my cobbled together AR shoots moa, or slightly better. Must be some kind of Voodoo.

I do find it a little amusing that the recommendations put forward are generally top tier gear. If anyone asks me directly I suggest middle of the road stuff, mostly from the position that you may not enjoy squatting in some strange posture missing targets that would be a piece of cake prone. I wouldn't suggest my approach unless it really is the only way to get shooting, going cheap can get a wee bit frustrating at times. If I had the coin for a S&B in the bank I'd be shopping for my next disposable car, only a decent one not my usual rolling time bomb...

Not sure why anyone would recommend those for someone shooting on a budget. Lots of great budget friendly options these days.

S&B and Spuhr are certainly top of the line and great equipment, but the law of diminishing returns applies in this sport as much as it does anywhere else.

There's no point in pretending an Athlon is on the same level of quality and performance as an S&B, but it certainly has the features and ability to get you in the game.

There's been no better time to get in the sport with a budget then now.

Waiting for a set of Burris XTR rings to arrive so I can mount my new Nikon FX1000 6-24x50 MRAD. I know ,a lot of scope to put on the $400 Remington 783 6.5 CM I picked up off the EE Lol. Traded in a rifle I had laying around at our good friends Prophet River for the scope. Hopefully I can get out in the next few weeks and try it out...
