So I have an old Lyman that has a bit of a glitch. When the arm is all the way down the ram is not at it's highest point. When pushing the arm down the ram goes up then drops a bit at the end of the downstroke.

I have adapted but I wonder if the pins have worn an oval hole. Just wondering if it is time to replace my old warhorse. I bought a new Redding to replace it but that was 15 years ago lol...

Pull it apart. Clean it and take a look at the holes and pins. Go from there. It may be a simple fix. Or it is time to pull out the Redding.

I like a over center press, primers are always perfect, bullet is exact. Never liked the feel of a dead stop press, they always leave me feeling unsure.

What are your opinions on the Forster Co ax press. I was just doing a little research and the system looks pretty slick.

It is certainly one of the most respected press. It does work very well. Availability is a royal PITA.. and the price for some may be steep. It may not be the best choice if you are going to do a ton of forming and wildcatting... research that side of things if that is the direction you are going.

However, a press that is functioning properly is not the bottle neck in making good brass/ammo. If you are doing alot of forming and wildcatting, then a big mondo press is a given. But for most basic sizing, alot of stuff works... dies and proper die set up is where the performance really is.

For most of the match ammo I make, I run a Lee challenger press... really. Small (which has some very good points), simple and I love the breech lock set up. If running longer/larger cases, many report good service from the Lee classic cast press. I do not want any press intervention in my functioning.... ie, I do not want the press to limit what, where and when I use it... so cam over or some limiter is not for me (I know where to get spare parts if I break stuff).

YMMV...

If I can help, give me a shout... and it will be a wait unfortunately.

I bought a well used Lee challenger press many years ago. Loaded 100,000+ and still going.
I've broken the (white cast?) toggles a few times because I wasn't paying attention, no fault of the press. I've since put steel toggles on it from the newer Lee breach lock press.
