I apologies if this question has been answered before but i searched and did not find a thing.

I have been shooting pistols at a club for a while now, and i just got my first non-restricted (ruger 10/22).

So my question is:

What is a good place for plinking Close to the L4E postal code. (gravel pit, etc.)

Thanks,

Hi. Plinking, being wandering about shooting at random targets, is considered to be hunting by the MNR. As daft as it sounds, you'd need a hunting licence. Shooting targets, in a safe place and manner, on Crown Land is ok though.
Problem is the shortage of Crown Land, close to you, that is not infested with assorted riff-raff like hikers, picknickers, bird watchers, etc. Your shooting spot must take into consideration anything and anybody behind your back stop out to several miles.

I see...

i thought plinking was shooting at targets and not really worrying about grouping etc., i definitely don't want to be wandering around the woods shooting at random things.

I was hoping someone could point me in the direction of a gravel pit or the like where i can put up a .22 dueling tree and have fun shooting my new 10/22.

Plus finding a spot like this would make it easier introducing a few friends to shooting since they would save the $20 range usage fee.

Thanks

In York Region, I would have to say your chances are pretty much nil. I believe every municipality has a firearms discharge bylaw. Here is the one for Georgina where there might be limited hunting.

In Simcoe County there is no public place to go plinking anymore. There is no Crown Land, just County Forrest. A couple years ago the County put in a bylaw that prohibits target shooting in County Forests. Hunting is OK, but you need to be a member of OFAH.

Want true crown land? Need to go well north of Orillia.

Thanks for the info SandRoad.
I didn't realize that south-western Ontario was so privatized.

the way my PAL course instructor made it sound i was under the impression that there are places all over the place for shooting non-restricted.

too bad, shooting outside might have been fun

"...didn't realize that south-western Ontario was so privatized..." Hi. Pretty much all the land is owned by farmers or city people. There is Crown Land that isn't in a 'no discharge' municipality, but it's infested with the riff-raff and nowhere near Richmond Hill.
Gravel pits are usually owned by road building companies and are posted.
Joining a club is your best bet. Opens all kinds of doors too.

If you know anyone, who knows anyone with private farmland in a region with no discharge by laws you can shoot on their land with permission.

Other than that your gonna spend more money on gas getting up north than you would for a day pass at the range.
