I just picked this rifle up and know nothing about them, looking to learn all I can. It was my grandfathers.

The stamping is a crown with C.R below that. enfield 1918 under that then S ht LE below that then III*.

on the barrel it is marked N 7393

There is a U on the thick part of the bolt

Is there any other particlular markings I should look for that would help.

You have a Short Magazine Lee Enfield Mark III* (three star), made at Enfield, north of London, in 1918. It is crown over GR, G for George V.
Is it a sporting rifle, or is it stocked all the way to the muzzle with a steel nosecap?
