Can anyone ID this pistol?

Old? New? Who's the maker? This was purchased by someone on another forum I go to at an estate sale for $50 USD and wants to know what it is.

A colt copy? Confederate copy? Italian copy?

  • No name
  • serial number is in the 17,000's
  • Round barrel, not hex
















 
I concur with the idea it may be a Griswold & Gunnison. The angle of the butt appears to be correct (It is "bent" rearward). The makers names don't show up on the photos of the ones that exist, so not much help there. You may want to take it to an Antiques roadshow type venue to get one of the firearms guys to look at it.. It is a beautiful pistol :D..
 
I don't know - although I would hazard to guess that when they were being made, getting them out the door and into the field was more important than making sure they were properly stamped.
 
whatever it is it's been HEAVILY repaired over the years.

Now the only OTHER problem with the G&G theory is that only 3700 were made and this is stamped with a MUCH higher number.

Now on some of the pictures of the serial numbers you can see that a larger serial number was stamped over a smaller one. Such as the picture below.

And yes upon further inspection most G&G's were not stamped with the company name.
