Hi,

Picked up this neat old rifle couple years ago, just now trying to figure out what it is. Seems to be some type of European stalking or took type rifle. Really nice shape except there is an issue with the hammer spring. Trying like hell to figure out what caliber it is, but no luck. Markings on the side of the barrel seem to be 0.5gr NGP M/71, 6 GR BI and DR patent. Also some proofs and numbers under the barrel, see pics.
Any idea what kind of rifle it is, and caliber? Tried couple cartridges to try to get an idea, 32-20 just a bit too loose, 9mm or 44-40 much too big….do not hav much else to try.,..hmmm…..
Matt

It uses 7.7gr of M71 rifle powder to shoot a 92.6gr lead projectile [bl is the abbreviation for blei - lead in German], but the calibre is not clear. It was not a high-power cartridge, but I can't find anything like what you describe, bearing in mind that is WILL be metric. You'll need to do a chamber cast.

The DR Patent stands for Deutsches Reichs Patent - indicative of a government-protected patent.

The BUG stamps are indicative of German proof-marks between 1892 and 1939.

The double trigger set-up is called a stecher, and the rear trigger is pulled back until it clicks, setting the front trigger to operate at hair pressure action.

Guess I got some of that wrong.

Thanks for the info guys, that is great. I had never heard of these rifles. It certainly is a very neat little rifle, quite unique, and in really nice condition, with case colours remaining, and dark bluing, worth fixing for sure. I recall the guy I got it from said someone who fancied himself a gunsmith, jerry rigged a new spring for it, but believe it needs a good one made, as the trigger seems to slip and that little lever on the left side of the frame ( the safety?) does not seem to work either. Maybe just needs a new tight spring made up. I am going to hold on to that reloading data, thanks for sharing that.

with regards to the cartridge ; put a small wad of patching material or paper towel down the barrel (from the breach end) with some string tied to it. Pour melted wax into the chamber and beginning of the rifling and when the wax has hardened, knock the casting out from the muzzle with a piece of dowel or a long brass rod if you have some. The string is in case the wax casting breaks, it keeps the pieces together. Use a micrometer to measure the base, neck and shoulder diameter as well as the diameter across the rifling. Also the total length of the cartridge. You can then go through Cartridges of the World and see what matches your dimensions. You can also go through the same book to hopefully find a North American cartridge still in production, and that can be formed into your cartridge

I have a recent copy of cartridges of the world...however, it does not list that cartridge. :(

That cartridge is in my 2nd edition but not in the fourth. someone in Europe still make that brass; had a box of new brass a few years ago; can't recall the maker but it was one of the common Euro ammo makers. Still shows up on occasion at some gun shows. A wtB ad might be worth a try.....wTc

The case measurements and diagram are in my Donnelys book so I can post them if anyone wants them.....shoot me a pm. Also; there is a wide variation in bore diams with that cartridge, no standard sizing at the time.

Thats great! Thank you for all the reloading info. I have taken it all down. Will def need to slug before doing so. First priority though will be getting that spring working again. Can anyone confirm if that is a safety mechanism on the left side of the frame?
