Can anyone let me know what a rough .22 Ranger is worth please

That's one of the older "Ace" style guns. What is the bore like? With the barrel like that I'd say $50.00 tops depending on how bad you want a project. If the bore is all pitted then it isn't worth anything except for what parts would bring if sold separately.

It almost looks like the muzzle was placed downwards at an angle, in about two inches of water, and has rusted. It is also probable that the bore inside has rusted in this area.

This would mean that you might be able to hit a Barn, if you were inside it. You are either going to have to cut the barrel back a bit (if the rest of the rifling is good) and reset the front sight, or you are going to have to counterbore the muzzle end of the rifle back a couple of inches.

Twenty bucks and you may win.
There is a bolt there and a stock.
And just maybe the black magic hat could have a barrel for you.
It's worth the chance and hopefully it will clean up nicely for your son.
Neat old plinksters for sure.

As a parts breakdown, it is roughly worth:
bolt--$30.00-$35.00, stock $30.00 if not cracked, rear sight $15.00, trigger guard $10.00-$15.00, trigger group $15.00 and front sight $5.00 if it cleans up = $100.00-$115.00

There was someone awhile ago looking for an Ace style stock.

That's almost certainly got a ruined bore. If it wasn't sitting in water it likely sat muzzle down on concrete or bare dirt from the look of the corrosion. It won't be limited to only the outside of the barrel. The inside for the last few inches will be crusty and pitted and accuracy will be non existent even after cleaning up. At the very least the barrel will need to be cut back. And it's more likely that you'll need either a new barrel or to get that one bored out and relined.

Sadly I think it's worth more as a parts gun than one for your lad to shoot.
